Quote:I thought it was illegal to transport more than $1 in US coinage outside of the country to prevent them from all ending up in Nigeria or India or wherever they were being shipped to by the container load only to have the Chinese try to reship fakes back for the scrap metal value. No you can take any amount you what except cent and nickel five cent pieces which are limited to $5. But it you take over 10,000 dollars you must declare it.

The store could have refused the transaction, since it wasn't a debt "Legal Tender" rules do not apply. There is no reason to compel them to accept loose change on a purchase.

It is amazing how many people do stuff like that purposely in hopes that someone will pay the rest for them. I just wonder how many more coins that guy had in his car.

When I was younger I used to think it was funny to hold up lines at stores by using cull Indian cents in part payment. The groans (and worse) were audible when, on occasion, the cashier gal would ring for the manager to get an OK.

I remember crawling around on the floor looking for pennies when I was in the Army in Germany for a pack of cigarettes. Everyone is down on their luck sometime. I'm with BadThad on this one.
