To me, it's amazing that there are 3 different denomination clashes occur on the 1857 cents.

I have to wonder if - indeed, it's my assumption - there was deliberacy to this unrelated to Mint testing.

Nor will we ever. It just makes more intuitive sense than using a test die which can't by definition offer a correctly-struck test coin or a realistic view of the collar's involvement. What, then, would they be testing?

1857 is known for three bidenominational die clashes for the small cent:
1. Obverse clashed with a 50 cent obverse working die
2. Obverse clashed with a $20 obverse working die
3. Reverse clashed with 25 cent reverse working die

The 1864 LM 2 cent piece FS-1901 clashed with an Indian Head cent (which I have several) is very clear, interesting how nobody has found an 1864 Indian Head cent with the clash from the 2 cent piece, at least not yet according to Rick Snow. The 2 cent clash was discovered by Bill Fivaz around 1992-4 era. I'd have to check my records from Frank Leone on it. "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. I've been reading up on the 1857 die clashes and from what I read online, it was a bored drunk employee who had his way with some dies on the night shift. HAHA a drunk employee sounds right. Very cool , I would love to cherry pick one of these, or the 50c clashed as well. Very neat stuff.
