No way, could not sell my collection for just one key coin. If part of you does this for investment (which I do), you should diversify. What if the one key you buy, like a gold piece, suddenly tanks in value? Secondly, there are too many coin types that I really love collecting- Indian cents, Buffalo nickels, Walking halves to name a few. On the other hand, I could stand to thin out my colelction. I hoard too much of too many things and probably need to focus better on certain denominations and try going for higher grades. I, too, love the hunt, love roll searching from coins from the bank, and love trying to complete sets. I just couldn't give all that up for one coin.

This was a great question - and I've enjoyed reading all the responses. I've often thought about selling off coins to upgrade or buy key dates for one set or another. When it comes down to it, however, I just can't do it. I'd rather save up for a higher grade coin than sell off duplicates. I'm basically a hoarder and am too attached to my coins.

Great question, Connonman! I had to think about this one for awhile. If I had a chance to acquire a true rarity like the 1893-s Morgan in ms67, I would do it. Otherwise, I'm just too attached to what has taken years to accumulate.

I started buying everything I have two wash books, 1 kennedy book, 1 licoln book, 1 type book. I have 5 and 10 dollar gold indians and libs. cc morgans you name it I was buying it. Then my dealer friend got me hooked on keys and semi keys.I will buy collections to break up and sell but the only coins I buy to keep are key and semi keys. I would sell the rest of collection or trade it for keys, does that make me an investor or collector?

I also voted no ,,but that does not mean that I don't have a specific set of guidelines for my collection ,,
I have a handful of coins which I have told myself to sell ,, but here they sit ,,Im not sure what I'm going to do,, maybe I will need to have Susan sell them for me ?
I still look at quality when Buying !

My goal is to end up with as many true rarities as I can get . Both for investment and enjoyment. I selected "yes".

I do not buy the my coins for investment. I like to look through my coin books. For me a nice looking VF coin is just as good as MS 70 coin. The increase in value does not matter to me as this point. My heirs can worry about the values of the coins.

Definitely no. I collect for historical value and beauty. I do not care 1 bit about actual value. In fact, I'd rather have a 700 beat up coin than a mint state modern coin. I'm just that kind of person.

I voted maybe but after thinking about it more, I would have to say no. I like the variety in my collection and do get some enjoyment from looking through my collection. I bought a large collection last spring and sold alot of it to recoup some of the money I fronted, and now I wish I had kept every piece. I hadnt sold any for months, and then put a set of 3 1921 Morgans (P,D,S) up for auction. On the way back in town one weekend, I decided I was going to keep them only to find someone had used the Buy It Now option and paid for them already. Ugh...so for now I will keep what I have and keep adding to the collection.
