Lot's of chatter and I don't know enough about this series to know how that's factored. My educated guess is G4 to G6. Good looking coin overall though!

I totally forgot about you GERMANICVS! Another example of a great coin. The LIHERTY error shows great unfortunately the date is fairly worn. The chatter doesn't bother me a bit. The coin has good color and honest wear. EAC 3 because the date is nearly worn away. 1796 S-103 R.4 3/3.

with EAC - AG3 just wish more of the date was showing on this coin. Color is nice and pleasing despite the chatter marks.

The uneven wear, distracting about the date as it may be, doesn't deter me from rating this copper a G-4. Granted that if one looks solely at the date and parts of the reverse, AG-3 seems apropos. On the other hand, there are greater areas of the coin, like LIHERTY, the bust, the wreath and the fraction that approximate a G-6. IMHO, it's an overall G-4 with an average surface. It's a most respectable example of this desirable variety.

I looked at a few other S-103's and the date is almost always weak, so I chaulked that up to strike/die as opposed to wear.

The rims are always weak on the 1796 Draped Liberties. The mint was still making their own planchets at the time and the rims were not upset as much as the English planchets later used.

To the world I'd say it's "only" AG-3, but to me, and I suspect many others here, it's beautiful!

Thank you everybody for your opinions. Many 1796 DBC varieties seem to have convex-shaped rims which would explain faster wear around the periphery. I have an S-93 and S-102 which show this peculiarity as well. This coin is ex ebay 5-6 years ago from one of the key coppers dealers - for the life of me I cannot remember how he graded it, but it was something like G5 to VG7. It was not cheap - in retrospect I may have paid too much. Still, its a non-corroded or severely damaged S-103.
