I am sure your dad is looking down and smiling that you took good care of his collection and plan on keeping some within the family to pass down. Obviously the 1909-O $5 is my favorite because it is a darn nice coin and very hard to find. Did you send all of your father's coins from his collection to be graded by NGC?

Quote: Did you send all of your father's coins from his collection to be graded by NGC? Well, not all of them by any means. Some coins were consigned and graded through Great Collections. Many when appropriate were sold ungraded myself on ebay. Then a number were sold just outright to APMEX and Heritage. There were 30+ coins that Heritage agreed to have graded for me without any commitment to consign, since I told them I wanted to decide what to keep and what to sell based on how coins did at grading. This ended up being somewhat of a long story with twists and turns and turmoil along the way. But relevant to your question, after I had expressed a preference for PCGS grading, they sent all of the coins to NGC. At the end of the day, I can't really complain because the coins did quite well at NGC. After that, a select few were sent to CAC...ones that Heritage thought had a good chance of stickering. I have about 10 coins coming up for sale through Heritage in the near future, and a couple additional ones that I'll probably sell myself. ---- Oh I forgot to mention that following advice from some sources including an expert who I reviewed the coins with in person, and really against the advice of Heritage, I had six of the NGC details coins cracked and resubmitted raw to PCGS. That didn't work out well at all really. They all came back with the same or worse details grades. Probably the worst case was the 1855-O above which went from NGC XF Scratched to PCGS VF Scratched.

Nice type collection. It seems to be strong on branch mint coins , especially C and D.
I'm surprised you're selling the 1800 $5.00 -- I must have been the centerpiece of the collection.

That decision was made partly to make the family happy and partly because the coin didn't "fit" as well with the other coins. If it was all purely my decision, I think we would have kept every single coin!

Great collection of gold and silver keepers.
When did your father start collecting?
Most of the silver and gold keepers are slabbed.

You're so lucky to inherit this wonderful collection. My father inherited some coins (which will eventually be mine) from his grandmother recently- an 1861 half eagle, five quarter eagles (1851,53,55,56-C,61), one British sovereign (1880-M), lots of Swiss gold, three Morgans, a Peace, and plenty of '64 Kennedys.

Outstanding group of coins! Made even stronger by the low mintage examples from the branch mints. I do think that you should get the $3 gold piece to complete the set.

Wow! Nice range to the collection, and I really like all the branch mint gold. I liquidated my dad's coins for his estate a few months ago. All modern proof sets plus a few common silver dollars. We didn't keep anything.

Only a few coins were slabbed, including the two PCGS rattlers above. I think my father was always interested in coins, but he did most of his serious collecting in the 1980's.

Wonderful selection of coins to keep and the 1909-O must be the QB.
