I can only dream about owning any ancient gold coin, but if I could coin 1 would be on the list. A beautiful coin in all respects, strike, color, and condition. His selling price is not over the top the coin is well worth IMO the $12 1/2K. Ancient coins are meant to be handled so I wouldn't worry about hurting the toning, though I still wouldn't want to put it in a pocket or polish it. Some sellers on Vcoins are very expensive but not all, you have to search through them to find the deals. Most also will entertain reasonable offers.

Echizento Thank you for pointing that out I have amended my initial post to include the website details. Sorry I am two steps ahead of myself lately.

Any comments on the similarities between the two coins? As the first one sold for $3000 at CNG in 2005 and the second is $12500 today so I want to make sure I am not buying the same coin.

same coin number , but not 2 same dies.
obv:difference in the form of the lips, nose ,forhead and eyes : so different dies.
rev: maybe the same die , very difficult to say ,for me there is a difference in the mark under the horses , maybe in the PH of Philippou , but it can be due to the light. For the price , compare on http://www.acsearch.info .I think this stater is to expensive .albert

Thanks Antwerpen both sellers specified the exact same dies so a little confusing. Also what makes you say it is overpriced? I have had a look through acsearch and a few others and none compare in terms of quality.

I doubt the seller paid anywhere close to $12500 for it and if you have patience you could probably wait and get a similar quality coin for about half the price.

When you get into the world of Ancient Greek gold coins you enter the world of "if you need to ask you can't afford it" collecting. Prices tend to get rounded off to the next nearest thousand and finding similar coins priced worlds apart is normal.

I recently posted several 'folles' of the Roman Tetrarchs from around AD300. They are early London issue and quite popular with collectors of such things. I paid on average around $40 which makes me happy as most dealers ask in the range of $100 - 120 which I think to be rather steep ! But whether we talk of $40 and $120 or $5,000 and $15,000 the percentages are the same !
Some people just have fatter wallets !

If you worry too much about return on investment you won't have the time to truly enjoy your collection.

PS
I live on what passes for an 'old' street in my city. To get to my 60yr old 7 room house I must pass by 22 room Victorian era mansions. The garages (carriage houses) behind these homes are bigger than my house ! I am quite happy where I am really and get the pleasure of viewing all that stained glass and finely manicured real estate every day ! Ironically most of those palaces have a Toyota Camry parked in the driveway. Just because they have money doesn't mean they are foolish with it ! If you attend a few international coin shows you are likely to find a dealer who needs to pay the bills. Make some offers and you just may get surprised ........ eventually.

They have a Toyota because they have to heat that house in winter and cool it in the summer. This is no small expense.

I could never afford the property taxes never mind the heat !

As it is I burn coal in the winter to keep nice and toasty. On a cold winters day when the air is still and the anthracite wet, the nostalgic scent of 'warm farts' wafts down the street.
Imagine back in the day when those mansions had boilers and soft (high sulphur) coal was heat of choice !

I save enough to buy more coins !
Bombs away !

Haha consider yourselves lucky guys I hear the tax rates in the Nordic Countries are ridiculously high but they provide most things, unsure if they provide coins and coffee tho

I am currently talking to the dealer what I think has happened is he has compared the coin to one graded the exact same that sold for 20,000 minus the fine style designation however that one is a Colophon type and is of course the one attributed as being of Alexander the Great.

By the way send me a link to your ebay FVRIVS RVFVS I would love to see some of the Roman coins from London (Londinium I think I heard it referred to as once or twice?)

Also I am looking to purchase a number of books on ancient coins and came across the following DVD set which includes the entire BMC set and heaps of other interesting books in PDF format
http://www.ebay.com/itm/325-Vintage...em2edfa1cb70

Can anyone comment on how useful the books are from experience etc?

most of these books are free on internet , like BMC and I think RIC also.
I bought a similar DVD 5/6 years ago for 2 pounds .Sometimes there is also a problem to have clear pictures , but it very interesting and easy to find an old book.So if you like it , for 10 pounds delivered it is not to expensive ,but I don t think there is an exanple of the greek alphabet inside , looking his Greek transcriptions : he writes : apsispt-ancient cthins-coins grssk-greek roomdroman .albert
