Except the one I sent them.

I'm going to agree with Metalman on the "reality" grade of 63RB, and I'll bet based on my own experience that PCGS saw it that way too.

MS66? RD? And forever will this nice ms64 RB coin reside in that holder........buy the coin, not the holder. Sadly though, someone will end up buying the holder.

After seeing this coin, I think I have a couple that might have a shot at MS69!

Thad I have always and still do believe that the TPG's have exceeded their scope of worth and attempt (successfully) I might add in some cases to manipulate the population of the grades in certian years across all denominations .

Dave's coin is a perfect example "I know what that coin deserved as a grade" ! someone somewhere who is probably a top submitter who has a top pop coin in their registry set would have lost big bucks by adding a coin that actually scored as high or higher grade wise .

which is why I refuse to play the TPG game ! The registry set program was and is one of the worst things that ever happened to this hobby second only to the dumbing down of the hobby with the advent of plastic grades .

I know collectors who could not grade a PO-1 coin and get it right,, because they rely solely on the plastic to tell them what they have .

Its sad !

A sad observation, but true. I go to estate coin auctions, let a slabbed coin graded MS-1,323 in a alphabet soup labeled holder show up and some guys can hardly stand-up. I know I am not buying that coin.

I see the same thing all the time ,, and exactly the reason why an MS-65 in a PCGS slab cost a large percentage more than a raw coin which may grade higher .

no matter what anyone tells you about buy the coin not the plastic ,,once inside the slab they are in seperable in the pricing of the coin .

It is actually an obsevation formed over quite a few years of resisting the allure of the TPG in the market place .

the value of my collection based on my grades in TPG holders would more than triple ,, this makes no sense to me if the value is in the coin and not in the plastic .

Rick, I guess many see a slab as a form of insurance. They cannot grade for themselves which means they have been burned in the past. Subsequently, they are willing to pay a premium to guaranty the coin and the grade. This is why an inconsistent grading by any TPG is usurious. When people are willing to accept the image you put out as an authority on a subject, you have a responsibility that goes far beyond "oops, I missed that one.

Jim that is so true and the example above graded 2 or 3 points high ,,is a very good example ,not only would the purchaser not be getting what is represented by the slab ,but it also skews the pop reports and census accounts for the Date and mint mark .
