Thinking a bit more about where I was going with this:

I have a couple of relatively modern sets I've started on that I do want to finish and will not require very expensive coins. There are no key dates. For these, I can get a full set of AU/MS grade coins for well within my budget, so why not do the whole set? I don't think a single MS-66 Franklin is really going to be that amazing over a folder of MS-62's.

There are also sets where you'd never be able to collect it all in higher grade. Like Barber halves. It would take me a long time to even collect a folder full of very, very low grade ones. Numismedia says a set of G-4 Barber halves is worth $2700! Or for that kind of money I could probably score a couple of MS-64's. I think I'd get more of a kick out of pulling out those MS-64's to ogle their perfection over a folder full of slicks.

So I guess maybe thinking about this has made me consider that a single coin may be better than a set, depending on what it is.

And then there's my Kennedy Set. I'm 1/3 of the way through and there are just so many of them! Maybe I'll end where I am and save up for that 1998 SMS and call it a set.

Quality! Right now, I feel completely overwhelmed with the volume of coins I have. I just have too many and the burden of reducing the herd is hanging over me as I get older. I really don't want to die and leave this for my family as it stands. None of them collect and they will most certainly not properly liquidate them when the time comes.

I will always be somewhere in the middle. With whatever coin budget I'll always want more than just one coin. This could explain why I don't have any key or semi-key date in my collection.

Its been quality over quantity for about 6 years for me now. I was lucky and had a knowledgeable collector redirect me at that point. I haven't regretted it since. I've stuck to a EF or better rule on all my coin purchases since then and during the period of my life where my income was a bit better I went to AU or better for a wail.

Now a days I mainly just look at beautiful coins. Pretty soon thatll change though when one of these employers out there bite on my job apps and I can move to a much better job!

I think that is really good advice Eco. I might just have to adopt the EF or better rule myself.

I always find myself tempted by something just because it is cheap. Especially if it is a type/denomination I do not have. lol

I was, and am, a hole filler** (OCD?) and accumulator. But now that I have so many holes filled (too many albums) and too much accumulated, I've been finding new holes to fill (British, anyone?) and upgrading the hole fillers. Thing is, when I upgrade the filled holes, I often would rather not *actually* put it in the hole, but keep it in a "better" holder. So the hole still has the hole filler.

**There is a reason some coins are graded as "filler."

Remember when you were a kid and cheap posters hung on your walls. Well now your all grown up with limited edition prints, artists proofs & original works. Hmmm

Yes, me too, and I have officially been diagnosed with a type of OCD.

I currently have 49 folders and 8 albums that I'm trying to COMPLETE, and a variety of US Mint sets, slabbed coins, and other oddball coins that are all over the house. I bought another 50 coins over the past week on ebay and can't stop until I get all those holes filled.

Conditions don't mean as much too me as to others, though I do have a limit to conditions being 'too' low; VG is about right for me. My goal is to fill all the cheaper holes and then concentrate on getting the higher priced coins; maybe one or two a year. I probably won't ever get all the $1,000+ coins but I'll forever try!

You know, they really should call it C-D-O, and get the letters in the right order.

I may have a different kind of OCD. I have a albums that I can't finish because I can't afford the coins in the grade that matches the other ones. That's the problem with my 20th Type set. I just need the Barber quarter and half, but the rest of the coins are MS (or sliders) and I can't bear to put a VF barber half in there so it sticks out like a sore thumb. And if I did acquire a AU/MS barber half, I wouldn't want it ungraded and in an album. I'd want it slabbed!

So that's why I think for the more rare series, I'd be better off not trying to make a set and just buying a few outstanding examples from the series. If I am not trying to complete a set, I don't care if the holes aren't filled and I don't have to worry about trying to find a lowest common denominator grading I can afford for the whole series.

@ Half

I know what you mean! Its so hard to pass up those lower condition coins! I saw a plan 28 Peace dollar in F for pretty good price. It was so hard to pass it up and not fill that hole in my collection. I did though and I know some day Ill have an amazing plan 28. You won't regret quality!

Good job Econ! We should start our own support group. lol

I passed on a couple cheap low grade 2 cent pieces today. LOL That is a denomination I do not have in my collection.

The US admin of the P.I. stuff is going to be super hard. I love those coins!

@ Half

lol, may be we should. I'm sure theres some others on this forum that could use the support as well lol.

Nice job on passing on the Two Cent Pieces. Its even tougher to pass on a cheap low grade coin when you don't have a coin of a particular domination. Two Cent Pieces are a gorgeous coin in better conditions. You will be happy you waited :)

There are some very nice designs in The US admin of the P.I stuff. I haven't personally gone after them yet. I hope your able to get a hold of some quality specimens!

It is better to have a better quality of coin. I often notice many purchases of coins that have rim bumps and scratches on them and the seller saying nice grade and they are definitely not worth the lower end of the price scale. I think I might have a good procedure for you to accomplish your goals.
First take your coins for an appraisal. If you are not able then sell them on ebay or wherever you decide to sell and then you will have the money to pay for better quality coins. It's always better to have good grade coins rather than a coin that will never escalate in price. You also are looking at an investment with the possibility that the price will continue to climb when you purchase quality coins.

I love the idea sweet! I might have to consider it when I get back to the states.
