It was a proof coin, it was most likely cleaned at some point and put into circulation. Or, it was just put into circulation and they gave it a details grade for being an impaired proof.

Proof is the way the dies are prepared and how the coins are made. Proof coins are made for collectors and with limited mintage. AU is a condition. almost uncirculated.

I wouldn't pay much for it. A problem coin is a problem coin is a problem coin. Wait for a nice one if you want a proof Morgan. They are available, you just have to save and spend a little more $$$ to buy one.

I wouldn't buy it. If the spots on the obverse are corrosion they will only get worse with time, eating into it.

It can't possibly be AU details if it's a proof...

I personally do not like this coin, and I would regret spending more than $200 on it. It is rare, which is why it may be appealing to you, but I would spend my money on something else that would be easier to resell if I ever have to.

proof coins can be AU or any grade for that matter. This coin is details from probably a combo of issues, Cleaned and scratched ect... Thank you for everyone's input. I'm still going back and fourth on it, as $500+ is a lot for a problem coin.

Correct - the TPGs apply the same numerical grades to proofs as they do business strikes, I believe.

I don't have a problem with this, however, but it's just having the skills to confidently state that a coin such as this one is undoubtedly a proof evades me.

Teach me using PUPs or other telltale signs to be aware of since I'm clueless on this one.

Thats a horrible looking proof if it even is one. I would pay 375 AT MOST for this thing.

Then again, I'm not a morgan expert, so... yea...

You can't call it AU, though. You'd have to call it Proof-50, 53, 55, 58 etc.

Because the PO1-MS70 scale applies to business strikes only.

And the PR-1 - PR70 applies to obviously proofs only. Even though it did circulate, it was never intended to be a business strike. Therefore, you can't give it an AU grade.
