I'm a fan of original toning. My favorite series is early classic commemoratives, then Lincoln Cents (09-58) and finally working on a Type Set.

Hello,

Pricing on toned coins is all over the spectrum and dependent upon each individual's taste and budget.

I am not aware of any price list dependent upon toning characteristics.

I don't go out of my way pursuing these type of coins but really enjoy them when I can get one with natural toning and not artificial toning having abruptly defined lines where the color changes etc.

jrhotz13 - You don't need that much skill to take digital pictures, save them, and post them to the forum. Perfectly fine cameras don't have to cost much today and they practically do the work for you. Just takes a little practice!

If you go to a large coin show, look around out the toned coins, specifically certified toned coins. You will be surprised how big of a premium toning can add to coin and they sell! The Michigan Numismatics Society Show in November had a few dealers how specialized in toned coins and I had to wait in a line to see what they had. Toned coins are pretty popular.

Anyway, My wife is the big toned coin collector in my house. She specializes in toned Indian Head cents in AU or better. If shes sees a silver coin with beautiful toning she'll pick those up too. Personally, I enjoy toned coins, but I don't search it out specifically. I am willing to pay a small premium on certified toned coins that happen to be a date or die variety I'm looking for.

SsuperDdave is the one to thank... and for this one too, if you really want to learn in-depth about how natural toning happens, the stages of color progression, the patterns, how to tell AT from NT, etc. Then read this page over and over as well as links in the page. This site should act like your "toning bible" if you plan on perusing raw toners...

Thank you tweak800.

It's a 1917-D, FH in AU58, PCGS.

Every coin has its price.
