A $10,000 coin that I'd have to hide in a bank box? No way. Now a bigger boat on the other hand...

I picked up a pcgs 65 red 09 svdb. It wasn't $10k exactly but close. Its the Norweb example. I love it. I am not building a high grade set. just wanted a trophy coin for a bit. Not to mention the prices have gone crazy for the rest of the series. This is one coin I will hold on to for awhile.

Im almost thinking of selling, just to put the green in the mpl's.

good topic.

Nice pick-up BajaBlu.
I just wanted a 09-S VDB since it was a childhood dream, but I didn't want to spend big bucks on it, so I got a F/VF one for under 1k. It does look a little dark from AT but confirmed to be genuine from several experts I visited.

nice. The circ. examples have jumped in price big time. If its been at or cleaned, use it as a pocket piece to get it original again. Only problem with that is if you forget you have it, and spend it. ouch. My dad always wanted a gem 09svdb, but never had one. I got it earlier this year and like it very much.
Once the price is $10-15k I would probably sell to fund other coin buys. Thanks for the kind words.
I just got a 1916 mpl in a 65br.pcgs was way conservative with the grade too. Its not right at $10k but its close.

It would be very easy to spend a 1909S-VDB since it still looks like the ones in circulation.
I just picked up another 1856 FE, but had to sell lower grade one to be able to afford it.

If I had the money to spend, sure I'd buy. But there is no way I can save that money these days.

If I was extremely wealthy I would buy certain $10,000+ coins in a heartbeat. But if one has to save up to buy a coin... don't.

Yes, I would probably spend $10,000.00 on the right coin if it crossed my path. But, I think all of the above things would happen to me. I can just see me now crawling in the desert like Howard Hughes and found dead with that coin clutched in my hand.

At some point, collectors have to realize that you can't take your coins along after you pass. If my income bracket was high enough that $10,000 was like a $100 is to me now, sure I would buy a coin like that, but just to enjoy it. Given my current retired income level, if I spend $10,000 on anything it will be to travel the world, not on a coin. I get plenty of enjoyment from the coins I buy at my level. I just purchased a BU Shield nickel for $130 to upgrade my 7070. I will get lots of enjoyment from that and leave it for my kid someday!

I would save and buy a nice EF Indian die Dropped 1 Aussie penny, if one fitting that grade actually exists. By the time I saved the $10 000, someone else would have already bought it 15 000 probably.

I just couldn't afford a coin at that price and if I did have or save the money for it, with my income, it could be better used on other things such as my daughters college when the day comes.

With that said, if my wife and I made a whole lot more money than we do (and we do pretty good), of course I would.

Got offered another 10k+ coin last weekend.
Don't know if I want another 1856 Flying Eagle, or buy something else. It is a little nicer than the one I have.

For all those who have bought $10,000+ coins, where did you buy? Is Heritage the only safe place to buy from? Did you buy them from ebay? If you did then what criteria the seller must meet?

Currently, I am not willing to buy any coin which costs more than $2000 because that is the maximum Paypal will insure. (I am not sure about Paypal's maximum. Suppose I pay a guy $10,000 for a coin on ebay using Paypal and the guy don't deliver, Paypal would only cover me for $2000?)
