Bob Campbell was talking to our class at the Summer Seminar, and he told us how he got to hold all five 1913 Liberty nickels in his hand at once, as well as both of the Smithsonian 1933 Double Eagles.

Let's add to this list from a recent experience to the coin store. Guy came in with at least $20,000 worth of gold coins in his pocket, all loose. Owed my LCS money, he gave them a 1947 50 pesos for a little over $500. About 1.3oz of gold, and I held it. Also, 1927 Saint Gaudens I held back when I was like 8. Also LCS had over 300 morgan & Peace dollars, of course I closely inspected each and every one of them. Also held a 1893 CC in VG8, graded by NGC. I think it's a mislabeled slab, it's clearly been cleaned.

The Amon Carter and Mickley 1804 dollars. The George Walton "rediscovered" 1913 Liberty nickel. A 1927-D double eagle MS66 PCGS. A Brasher doubloon was probably the total coolest, though. None of those coins did I own. Best Regards, George

I've seen an 1804 silver dollar, but I've not held one. I've held a 1914 D XF ish Wheat cent, but I've never held a gold coin.

The Carter 1804 dollar at a coin show about a million years ago, an 1895 Proof dollar in 67 at a show about 10 years ago and an 1879 pattern Washlady Dime in copper a couple of years ago. All happen to be some of my favorites over the past 50 years.

The other day I held a complete book of 1909-1940 cents, minus the 1922 no D. The guy who brought it in claimed he was remodeling a house, found it in a hidden area, blah blah blah. I don't believe that story, honestly I kind of think it was stolen but whatever.
All the coins in there were cleaned, sadly. Everything at least from 1909-1936 were, the others not so much LOL.
But yeah, cleaned 1909 S VDB in about VG-10, 1914D in about F-12, 1924D in about VF-20, 1931S in about VF-30, all cleaned sadly.
They paid $450 for the book. Since I've been a long time loyal customer coming in every week for years, they let me look at coins they just got in and I'm sometimes the first people to look at them (usually, even before the LCS sorts them too). So this book was one of the things that was in the vault that he brought out.
I've seen in the vault, if that's not cool lol. They are sitting on a motherload of proof sets, and we are talking about 300 of them from 1960-present.

Also handled about 7-10K wheat cents in the span of 3 1/2 hours several days ago there. All unsearched until I came along. Cherrypicked the decent dates out for $0.05 apiece. No keys or anything, found some memorial cents that they were happen I found, even though they lost $0.02 per cent.
Initially my total was supposed to come to $3.75 for all the wheats I picked out, and $6.50 for the half I picked out of the silver bin, so 10.25 in all, but the guy bumped it up a bit more because he noticed some of the cents I picked out.
Still gave me a good deal though, $17 for all.
Several of the coins paid for it all, 1909 VDB with AU details, cleaned though, a 1929 D cent in AU+, about 10 1927D and 10 1927S cents, etc.
Not to mention another 10 or so 1918 S's and several decent 1921 S's and a nice high grade XF 1921 cent that was an upgrade piece.

When I first got into collecting world coins, the first coin I ever drooled over in the coin guide was the early Italian Lira, shortly there after I found one in an antique shop. My favorite coin that I own to this day!

Nothing out of the ordinary, but a nice dealer at a show let me hold a raw MS Liberty head double eagle.

A Martha Washington dollar pattern coin, which I didn't know what it was at the time.

A matte proof 1915 Panama Pacific half dollar at the Long Beach show directly from the safety deposit box of the designer. He owned 10 of them and all 10 were sold at that show. Initial price was $10,000.00. I am sure that by the end of the show they could not be bought for that.

A 1793 Half Cent in VG. It was not in any kind of holder - raw coin! This happened at a coin dealer's shop which I frequented a lot. I was well acquainted with the shop owner, so he was very comfortable with me handling a high dollar coin. This one was a beauty - a problem-free VG, light brown in color. He had just purchased it that very morning. Sadly, when I went back to the shop a couple of weeks later, he asked if I remembered the Half Cent. He produced it again and let me take another look. I couldn't believe it was the same beautiful coin I had seen earlier. It was now a very ugly black color! The shop owner said that he had sold it to a guy who took it home, tried to clean it with something, didn't like what happened, and returned it at a substantial loss! It was very sad to see the ruination of such a historical coin. I consider myself very priveleged to have held it in my hand pre-cleaning!
