Looks like the scale is tipping towards real.

David,
The most important thing you could do now is get the weight in grams.

It appears genuine and repaired. I agree $750 USD sounds fair enough. Should weigh about 26.5 grams given the wear which is down to VG Details or so.

It looks real to me, B-3 variety. 1797 is a little better date but not better priced and the B-3 is common for the year. With the hole the $750 figure sounds about right for a RETAIL value. Not what a dealer would pay.

Slabbing it would not help with the value, but it might make it a little easier to sell because so many people can't judge for themselves and are afraid to risk more than a few dollars without having a crutch.

Please understand that I'm in rural Maine, over an hour away from any reliable coin dealers, so popping into the local coin shop is not an option for me.

Same situation here.
Your best option is to believe in the CCF members who know and have been around a number of years.
Conder101,
BH1964.
Nice coin I would hold on to it.

Certainly looks OK to me. I've seen a fair amount of silver from that period with that hundred-years-in-a-drawer look after a long life.

Looks real to me (from what the photographs can show), this coin is worth having put into a TPG holder, preferably PCGS or NGC, either one will call the coin damaged or "details" not gradable but genuine. The repair isn't all that bad on the plug or hole IMO. Bear in mind that a coin that is damaged generally brings 40-80% less than a similar coin without the damage. This dollar being an early example of US history has quite a bit of value regardless to most collectors.

Condor101 and BH1964 have both proven to be very knowledgable when it comes to early US coins here on CCF. Don't take advice from those that claim the coin is fake that can't back up their reasoning without just the mention of "FAKE" and have no points as to why they think so.

This is a very nice coin in spite of it's previous damage. Thanks for sharing it with us DavidS.

Using an old electronic postal scale that measures in whole grams, the weight comes in at 26 grams which I would take as a close approximation. The actual exact weight could be a fraction either way.

Condor101, Thanks for your identification of it as a "B-3 variety" I've looked up 'B-3 Variety', which I understand is short for 'Bolender 3', and, as I understand it, that means: "Only six stars at right facing bust (the only use of this obverse). Large letters in legend; 8 berries in left branch."

I want to thank all of you again for your input. I do think I'm going to put this up for auction on ebay at the end of the month. The more I understand about this coin, the better I'll be able to present it, and the better I'll do in the final sale.
Rest in Peace

Please let us know when you list the coin so we can follow the sale. Good luck with a nice early historic coin.

If you have it TPG, I would save money and have ANACS grade the coin. PCGS & NGC are too expensive...
Whoever did the hole patch, did a poor job.
About 15 years ago I had purchased a 1795 Dollar in EF condition with a large hole that removed most of the letter "E" in LIBERTY.. I sent the coin to a expert in hole repair, with a note requesting the cost to "fix" my coin...
For that type of repair it would cost $450.00 ~ & I agreed to have the work done..
When I received the Dollar back I needed my 10x triplet to see the repair (his work was that good) and my guess is some here on this forum may know him.

The only drawback was my once EF Dollar would grade no higher then Very Fine, as to help hide his work, he would add what looked like bag marks over both sides of the coin.

I ended up sending it to ANACS with the notation of it being repaired..

ANACS graded it VF (as expected) and repaired...
I ended up selling it for $1,200 in my pre-2006 ebay Store.
I will follow this thread to see if any member knows the coin repair expert that worked on my coin.
Hint; I could have saved $50.00 if no letter was missing...

I have one of these in VF grade and your coin seems to match up for shape of letters and numbers, stars, and devices. Looks real, with damage (plugged hole plus obverse scratches).
If you are going to put it on ebay I'd first invest the ANACS grading fee. Many potential buyers likely won't even consider a bid on a non-certified early dollar due to concerns about authenticity. I think you would easily recover your grading cost since bidding will probably go higher on a certified coin.

DavidS, we advise against buying issues like this one raw, outside a slab. There is really no way to prove authenticity via electronic means like images - I'm "comfortable" that your coin is authentic but I can't state it as a certainty without ever holding the coin in my own hand.

So, you will be playing at a disadvantage by offering it raw. Many potential buyers will walk on by, as these are too frequently counterfeited.

Once again, thanks to all. The advice on ANACS grading/certification is well taken and I think the expense will be a good investment. I'll let you know the result when I get it back.

ANACS is good too, not sure why I didn't mention it in my first post, I submit more coins to ANACS than the others combined, but then again I don't submit all that many coins any more.

Anxious to see the results, sorry for jumping to a conclusion. Just didn't look "right" to me.
