I purchased a coin from this seller before. It was nothing like what I was hoping and expecting. I returned the coin, and left negative feedback due to the misleading pictures and description. ebay deleted my negative feedback, claiming that since I got my money back, I had no bone to pick with the seller. Typical. Rob.

Quote: Westcoin, California proofs were those ones with painted frost correct? The coins were polished with a high speed drill, like a dentist drill or Dremel, then dipped in a solution of cyanide or similar, sometimes wax was applied to the relief areas and the coin was either etched with a chemical or spray painted to make a frost look. Then the wax was removed. It was pretty darn convincing, I've seen a couple, so much like the photos, depicted here, though they had little to any marks, in hand where as these coins would look very different in hand, I'd wager, with lots of bagmarks and scuffs. The California Proofs were very deceptive, it took until PCGS came along to shut them down, don't think anyone got called on doing them outright, but a few dealers had suspicions.

I tend to agree with the crack-out theory. I found an MS61PL coin this seller recently purchased and I'm waiting for them to post an auction to sell it.

Dave,
From the sellers altered photos it will be hard to identify any coin that he sells from a previous photo.

It's not a common date in PL.

Quote: Canadian, it's not one of my coins. It's from a recent auction catalog. I only have one DMPL (an 1880/9-S in PCGS MS63DMPL) and can't do nearly as well as those pictures with my old camera and poor lighting! My mistake, It's an incredible looking example.

California Special 1880/9 S with White Paint. It appears that the seller got a little careless with Photo Shop touch up on this GEM.

That's not the the super-duper-ultra-rare "Stars Floating On Water" variety?

Mine's jealous. She only wishes she could be a California Girl. Or maybe not. I wonder what kind of magic tricks that seller could do on mine, could he make it a nice MS68DMPL for me? ;) (Coin is not for sale, not now, or ever, so no worries.)

You should get that professionally imaged, paralyse. I'm sure it's a stunning coin in it's own right, and would present as such if accurately photographed. I love DPL's/DMPL's with a touch of toning on the edges.

I'll have to find someone to do that. I don't have a DSLR, nor photo experience beyond the very basics. I will be at ANA Money in 2016 so I might be able to find someone there who has the ability to do so. Where I live, one LCS went out of business 2 years ago after 20+ years open and a 2nd closed his storefront and now sells his inventory online only due to (according to him) the rent being more than the profit from walk-in buyers.

You can always ship it to somebody for photography. All of my coins have gone to two people, one being very well known who gets my high-quality material, and the other being a local individual I use for minor stuff. I highly recommend Todd Pollock for Morgans. His images are amazing, and his prices are quite reasonable given the quality he can produce. http://www.bluccphotos.com/a/history.html

I didn't want to take the thread sideways, but I just sent Todd a Morgan yesterday.
