I have no research here at all other than experience, but most US mint products seem to lose value over time in the secondary market.
Once the hype wears off or most collectors fill that hole, dealers need to turn their inventory and they do that on price.

The reason I asked this question is because I'm debating if I want to buy them now or just wait until this series is over. I kind of wish I would've waited to buy the 99-08 sets now.

I have proof sets from the 70's and early 80's that were bought for me that I are worth peanuts.
I would say, go with what history tells you on this. Which is that proof sets generally do not really go up in value over time.

I stopped collecting proof sets some time ago due to they all just drop, drop, drop in value.

However, for me coin collecting is much less about investing and much more about having the coins to enjoy. I buy proof sets every year, but I do understand that my children probably won't get as much as I paid for them when I'm gone. |

The 2012 silver proof sets have definitely come down, but I attribute some of that, and the value of the other years to the drop in silver.

I look forward to 2017 when the sets will return to two lenses and a lower price. However, I've heard that they are considering issuing both regular and RP sets, so I'll have to buy both.

I started buying the proof sets to make sure I had all of the 50 State Quarters. Then I continued when ATB was being issued (somehow I got lucky to get a 2012 straight from the mint it seems looking back at my order history and reading these comments). That said, I will probably stop buying the proof sets once ATB stops unless they come out with another quarter set. |
