Sorry, here's the picture. This is the best re-punched date that I've seen. For 1888 that is. Cheers, Bill

Here's a neat one to look for: I think that they show up in the reverse order that they were posted in, so those above will be 3rd 8, 2nd 8, 1st 8 last. B

Yes okiecoiner that's the one I have as #2 with all eights doubled and it's definitely collectable. I think the reason I choose them in this order is that I was able to come up with four coins with your eights and as I said I've not seen another coin like the first one. Cheers, Bill

Fourmack, I'd like to see a little doubling on the first eight to place it on a very short list of coins showing the best three eights doubled, as people have said there are a lot of 1888 with doubling so to me it has to be very pronounced. However with that said I also noticed that the "1" in the date also appears to have doubling to me that would be first and a nice find.........now I have to go back and check all my 88's again.
Cheers, Bill

"CV is the date pictured below the R/P first eight that you are referring to. I've been looking for another of this coin for over three years and have had no success." Yes, exactly. It's one of the best kept secrets in large cents. When I scored a MS63 at a coin show for peanuts, it was one of my happiest finds in 5 years of collecting. I buy every single one on ebay I can get my hands on.

CV, as you know it's not always possible to see the doubled date with poor e-Bay pictures and with all the Vicky crud and what not. I sometimes use a die crack on the obv. just to the right of the "C" in Canada as a marker however there are two reverses used with this obverse. I've bought three coins on e-Bay using this obv. marker hoping to find another with the doubled eights and in each case they were the much less desirable second reverse.
Does your coin have this obv. D/C between the "C" & "A" in Canada? Would it be possible to show us some pictures?
Cheers, Bill

Just a comment -- the deep level of dedication and expert knowledge of posters on this thread around the 1859 varieties is truly fascinating!

fourmack...that's one of the three (or four) desirable LAST 8/8 varieties.
There is, in fact, a LAST 8/8/8 (Triple punched 8) as well...which I will separate from the Double 8/8s in my work...

I agree with CV this is a coin that displays a very nice re-punch on the last eight and coupled with an excellent example of the second eight re-punch it makes for a coin with an appealing distinction. Fourmack there are a couple of obverses varieties also that you can look for in the 1888's. See if you have or can find a 1888 that has all the obverse letters intact including the lower serif on the "D" in DEI (on most all 88's there's only a short stub for this serif}. I've not concluded studying these at this time but I suspect there may be only a single die that produced these and they can be quite difficult to find. Good luck and let me know if you have one.
Cheers, Bill
