Thanks for the comments and guesses. The range was VF35 to AU50 and PCGS said AU53. In-hand the obverse looks all of AU53 but the reverse does appear XF+. I believe PCGS was a touch generous and would go AU50 myself.

Well done. Technically, I can understand - the ear is sharp, and the wheat kernels appear raised. It just somehow doesn't look AU!
