Reminds me of my Grandmother's lucky nickel. She was born in 1894 and , as a ten year old girl found a Shield nickel and kept it all her life. It is worn and not worth much, but priceless to me. I miss her. Thanks for the story!

My grandmother was born in 1899 also. I put together a year set of 1898 (I had the year wrong) and gave it to my mom for Christmas. She loved it even though I had the year wrong (my grandmother passed away in 1984 and I don't have the greatest memory). It is interesting to imagine she might have actually had those same coins at one time (I picked coins in the F-AU range).
I am now working on a 1899 year set - luckily both years are fairly common and you can easily make a nice looking set for well under $100. No reason not to start a new hierloom!

Great story. I'm sure your son can't wait to get the coin and show it off. He is a very lucky young man.

What a great story! I write short stories and that would make a very interesting story.I wrote one recently about as a kid helping my dad count and roll those pennies on the cold wood floor at our old farmhouse--the floor was cold, but those memories warm my heart! What a lucky young man your son is!
