I use a pair of channel locks to break most slabs, and just pry them apart. But I had to cut the SEGS slab apart with a hacksaw. I think breaking slabs to get high grade modern coins for a Dansco is a great idea if you can get them at a reasonable price.

I do not think any slab will be able to resist my power rotary tool and a cutting wheel.

dohcollector,
Many keep their coins in slabs for all those reasons you mentioned above. Slabs just don't offer a viewing experience like an album does and you are always looking at your coin through a chunk of plastic. IMO the true purpose and value of graded slabs is to facilitate buying and selling. The slab certifies the opinion of a neutral third party expert. Similar to getting a jewelry appraisal. Once you own the coin and don't plan on selling it you can keep it safe in many ways that offer a better experience. You can always get it slabbed again if needed for resale.

At least with a slab, you know your getting quality. When you buy a raw coin and especially from a stock photo listing you just don't know what you'll get.

I think it would be OK to bust out low value coins like the prez dollars. I'd never bust out a semi or key date though. Too many fakes out there sold raw. The slab proves you have an authentic coin.

I have broken out many slabs (commons, semi keys and a couple of key date coins) and opened mint and proof sets for my Dansco albums. I have never had an issue with doing so.
However the slabbed coins I have bought to put in my 7070 are going to be tough to break. I will cross that bridge much later and I have over 50 coins to go to get it filled.

Slabs can be fakes and the TPGs are not perfect. They make mistakes. I prefer to buy a coin in hand (US Mint products being the lone exception). The coin will look the same raw or in plastic.

Quote: I am tired of getting junk buying single coins on ebay that have spots and blemishes (Prez Dollars). I would think slabbed coins would provided excellent examples. I don't collect this series but I am interested in a few of the coins. Just remember the dollar coins are so very reactive that after busting them out you may find that a few months after you put them in your albums you have spots, blemishes and unattractive toning anyway.

Too true I bust out of slabs, too! More busting out of OGP, but very occasionally I'll acquire modern (several JFK halves) for Dansco albums

I don't mind busting open sets from the mint. It's a pretty good way to get decent coins.
