Yeah.....my dad's in the Hospital too and at 6:30 am I brought him his newspaper as well as these coins..... we looked at them together and I told him i'd take some pics and post some of them up on this forum. He was pleased to see the coins again. The Flying Eagle cent is in excellent condition and "Blue Book" says $100.00 in AU-50 which is what "I" think it would grade. RedBook must be considerably higher ! Can't wait to get a pic of that one up for ya'll to see and give your thoughts on. I'll try to get to that by the end of the day.......hope I have no trouble posting pics though....... I get frustrated easy ! |

Congratulations! It's always fun to find something you didn't know you had. And getting these 19th century coins in any kind of reasonable condition is getting harder with every passing day. Well worn versions are common, however. If that FE cent is truly AU, that's great. Can't wait to see some good pics of 'em.

Littleboy, The 1880 Shield nickel is not in good condition and the date is barely discernable........in fact at closer inspection I need to get it home and put my mag. glass and light on it. I saw in Blue book how rare that one is !! With my cheap mag glass here at the office, I just can't quite make out the last number.....it looks like a zero, but it may not be. Whatever the last number is, it's rounded at the top........but not sure. I just guessed before. I KNOW ....... NEVER GUESS ! All of my other dates are easy to make out.....but that one and the Standing Liberty quarter I can't. And I'm having trouble taking good clear pics with this digital camera. I think I'll go borrow my mom's $500.00 one and see if it takes better "close-up" pics. I've never taken pics of coins before, so bear with me on this till I get the hang of it !! The one I have here at the office is a cheap one we use for construction sites and the buildings we build........ IT SUCKS !! The Flying Eagle........ with the naked eye most all of the "feather definition" is able to be seen. A little bit of wear on the tail feather part and breast. Back of coin looks really good. I bought a Flying Eagle last summer that wasn't anywhere near this good of conditon....... If I can find a darn camera that will show some definition on coins.... I can't wait to put it up here !! |

Nice find. And for cameras at a construction site, usually decent cameras but the people that use them are clods. I used a Sony Mavica FD88 at a major construction site for almost 2 years and shot close to 10,000 photos with it. Still have that camera. Usually it's not the camera but the person using it that makes the difference.
Hope all those coins you came up with are great.

if you are unsure of the last number in the nickel, look at the first three; as long as the third number is definitely an 8, you can tell whether or not it is an 1880 by the first number. in 1880, the 1 had a thin rounded point on top and in 1881-1883, the 1 had a thicker flat top.

Wow, nice cache. Congrads! Becareful with the 1880 because a lot of worn 1883's like like a 1880.

Kk....I have the $500.00 digital camera and the coins with me here in the office, but I don't yet have time to try it yet..........
First timer trying to take pics of coins and/or "post" them as well, so I hope there are no "issues" !

I am "not" smarter than a camera apparantly and am a "clod". When I try taking the pics, I get a blurred circular version of what's there. I tried different colored backgrounds. I tried holding the camera away and zooming in, I tried real close........ not happening.
So....... I took the camera (and about 10 coins) over to my Mom and said "What's up with this junk camera?" I left the coins there for her to attempt to get some photo's and if successful, then to show me how to do it ! So I may have to wait a couple days or so until she does this for me !

Are you using the macro setting on the camera(usually indicated with a flower icon)?

Yep....that's what I was advised to do by the owner of the camera (my mom). But once I "do" know how to take these pics.......... LOOK OUT ! I'll be putting them up left and right !

Still waiting on my mom to take pics of 10 of those coins ! I hope that by the end of the week or the weekend she'll have some decent pics for me to try and post......
