It was a good value, so I was happy.
Price is all relative, right ? An AU 1909-S VDB for $800 would be a steal while an MS60 2005 Lincoln Cent at $5 would be a rip-off. Having it slabbed was a big bonus since there are a lot of fake 1877s out there, mostly altered from other, more common date IHCs

I need some inputs on cent collectors here... what are the other "key dates" of the entire small cents series ?

I'll reveal the grade when I get more guesses.

Good question. I will take a look at that coin later from different angles to figure that out. It goes to my bank box this weekend for safekeeping.

Nice coin! I have a few myself. I would like to expand my collection, which are the 'key' dates and which ones are impossible to get ahold of?

This one looks VG-8 to me for detail. Most letters in Liberty are partially there. To get to F-12 I think you need all letters visible, although they can be weak.

The surfaces on both sides look uniformly pitted, likely from corrosion. The color suggests to me that this coin was buried or otherwise exposed to a severe environment. You mention it has been slabbed; is it net-graded due to environmental damage? If it has in fact suffered damage the price should have been appropriately lower than for an undamaged VG-8 example.

Looks VG-8 to me, also from what I can see it looks like it has been cleaned (to remove corrosion?). With a mintage of 852,500 it's quite rare in any condition.

I had to re-read a few times on what you meant. What I should have said is... I own a few IHP, not that particular year, so sorry to get you all excited. The years I do own are as follows:

1892 All of these grade G-4, no visible Liberty

Key dates and hard to come by are two different subjects. You must remember that scare in coins also means not easily to come by. Then too if your using ebay or other on line places for you purchses some coins are more readily available than at coin shows and coin stores. For example I only buy at coin shows and have had a lot of problems acquiring the 1871, 72 and the 09S in higher grades. Contray to that many dealers at coin shows appear to have one or more of the so called rarer 1877 and 1908S. Those coins are sort of like a 1909S VDB that is rare but commonly available in numerous grades almost everywhere.
So the point is where you buy your coins and what you are willing to pay for them is what makes them either rare, difficult to find, not common, over or under priced, etc. Many times people get a decent price on ebay but then add the postage, handling, insurance, etc and the price goes up.

I think its an acceptable for a key date.
