No deal.... I can think of plenty of better ways to spend that money... and they don't include a coin that is mis-described. The legends on the left hand side look quite clear and yet they look really weak on the right hand side with them kind of fading into the flan. That is not quite like any 5/5 strike I have ever seen. I might even question the authenticity (I don't like the look of it...but I don't know enough...) There are better examples for less money on Vcoins I think. For $2280 you could have this one... which looks a much better to my eye. Or there are several cheaper ones which all look OK.

How would you guys rate the strike on this one? Could NGC miss by more than 2 points meaning this is actually 3 or lower out of 5 strike? Or worst case its a 4? the front is decent, the problem is with right sid of the front?

No deal, I don't know what scale the grader was using when he gave it 5s but IMO it shouldn't have been graded that high. The coin has nice detail and the strike is good but weak in some area's The reverse is off centered. IMO it's not an Extra Fine coin. I would say VF+ at best.

When I look at the possible alternatives for spending that kind of scratch ......... How about 3 near museum quality sestertii !
Caligula Claudius and Nero in VF+ condition or this ? It would take me around .003 seconds to make that decision !

@FVRIVS, sorry I thought no harm in asking since I'm still very new in this. I wouldn't know the price of those Caligula, Claudius and Nero near museum quality. And yes I would take more than .0003 seconds to decide. Cause again, I'm new.... That's why I was asking in the first place actually.

In answer to "should I be worried that it's fake? Not sure how I could know for sure.."
I couldn't know for sure. What would discourage me are a number of things.
Firstly the item inside the slab is not as described on the slab. If that is a 5/5 strike then I am a Dutchman (and I am not!)
Secondly a quick search yields better coins for less money. Why would you consider this coin if better ones can be had for less?
Thirdly these other coins appear slightly different to my eye.. the style of the legends is sharper and the font looks slightly dissimilar.
So I am not saying "this is a fake" but I am saying that I find enough problems to worry, and certainly enough to pass on this coin.

Numinumi, I'm sure FR meant no harm in his reply to you. His area of collecting is in bronze coins and was just pointing out that you could get three of the twelve Caesars in high grade for the cost of this one over graded and overpriced Tiberius. Having a Tribute Penny is a a coin that most collectors want. IMO there are enough of these coins out there that the high price is only based on the story behind the coin and not it's rarity. Coins mentioned in the Bible have always interested me and I have a few. If this is an area you want to collect than I would start off with a Widows Mite and a Tyre Shekel. Depending on the grade the shekel will cost more but no were near what a Tribute Penny in the same grade would cost.

Mind a simple comparison? Here's a pic of a Tribute Penny I bought as part of a collection in the early 1980s. It is not perfect. The obverse strike is shifted to the right and there is weakness in the strike at 5 o'clock that blurs the lettering so that TI CAESAR is almost unreadable. That is what links it to Tiberius. Shame, right? On the reverse there is a corresponding weakness of the strike also at 5 o'clock that blurs the letters PO of PONTIF and part of the legs and feet of the figure of Livia. This is not the worlds best coin by a long shot, but it is still a nice appearing example of the Tribute Penny. I have been pleased to have it to this day. Here's the thing. I was able to get a nice example for a LOT less than the numbers you have been looking at. Not sure exactly how much because the collection had a couple of hundred coins in it, including a nice but darkly toned portrait denarius of Julius Caesar, all of which came to $1300 back then. No, those days are gone and that kind of deal was uncommon even then. But it happened, and the point is that if you can be satisfied with less than perfection for iconic material you can do more with your money than put it all into one or two coins. Finally, if you aren't able to determine for yourself, or through an expert advisor, that a coin is good and will return your money to you some day, don't put out a lot for one until you can do that.

Still pretty expensive, for $3000, you could get the same coin in gold..
