NumisRob, I'm glad you have good memories from Cuba. 5 years is a long time! Maybe it is time to return :)
Bstrauss3, I am intrigued! What is this World Coins forum that will LOVE have me participate?
Thank you all guys for your warm welcome!

This forum has different subsections, what he is getting at is the "world coin forum" is the correct subsection to post Cuban coins. I travelled around the Caribbean for about 6 months when I was 25...I didn't do Cuba unfortunately and I can't recall ever seeing Cuban coins before so I would be interested to see some. Of the Islands I visited Aruba was a particular favourite...nice place and they had some square coins when I was there ^^

Thanks, DavidUK for the info! I have already posted an article there and you will most definitely see some Cuban coins and learn their stories in my posts. Although we do not have square coins, sorry ;)
thanks BadToTheBone and Joseph7420 for your welcome!

Hi, Joe2007. Thanks for your welcome. I am very curious! What is this lonely Cuban coin you have?

Saved it from the melt bin. A local coin shop dealer offered it to me for a bit above melt since he couldn't sell it on ebay due to PayPal restrictions on Cuban coins. The dealer said that he bought it from a long time collector who had owned it for decades. I wonder how long it has been in the states?

Wow! I have no words! Those gold coins are very rare! In 1915, only 638,000 were struck. Who knows how many were already melted in turmoil times in Cuba? Very few left! It probably arrived in the US in 1959, after the triumph of the revolution. I am no expert, but I think it is a great acquisition. Long ago, Cuban fathers used to give such coins to their daughter as dowry.

I have a cousin that lives too far away from me to really know. He has about 20 years on me and has made millions in the internet world. He travels to Cuba twice a year and loves it! He helps people in Cuba "un-lock" and "jail break" their phones (I have no clue what that means).
So do you go to the internet cafe to get on CFF? My cousin said that is how most of his Cuban friends get on the internet.
Glad to have you here.

Bienvenidos! When you get more familiar with the site, I'd love to hear about the basic structure of modern (and classical) coinage in Cuba. Is it some form of peso or dollar with fractional coinage? How often does US currency and coins turn up in Cuba? Do you live in the city or a smaller community?

Biedercoins, if things have not changed in Cuba since I was there is 2004, there is actually 3 circulating currencies. the US$, the Cuban Peso, and then what is familiarly known as the Gringo Peso (minted/printed for foreigners) and sold 1P to $1, and spends like 1 peso.
there was a law about how much US$ one person could bring into the country per year, and if I am not mistaken how much one Cuban citizen could actually have at any one time. Things may have changed in 11 years, especially with the lightening of trade embargoes by the USA.

Hi, Harmonica. Thank you! I have very good friends in Vancouver and Toronto. "Fixing" mobile phones so that they can be used in the island is a thriving business in Cuba. Your cousin is right, internet cafes and now Wi-fi hotspots provide internet access, but are expensive. Some of us prefere just wait until our boss is looking elsewhere at our workplace to make a quick visit to CCF :)
Biedercoins, thanks for the Spanish greeting! I promise you I will post the answers to your question as soon as I can, maybe under a new topic called "Cuba". I live in Havana, the capital of Cuba.
ace_ftw, hi. Things do have changed a little in Cuba since 2004 :) Today there are two circulating currencies: Cuban peso (CUP) and Cuban convertible peso (CUC). 1 CUC roughtly equals 1 USD. USD is not leal tender anymore, but you can still have a bank account in USD.
