If memory serves me correctly, $1,000 box of anything would be SBA dollar coins. That's probably what they were thinking of at the time. Halves most certainly are $500 to a box. FED standard.

What Owassokie said is right. that bank probably has 1000$ minimum order, weather one bag(1000$) or 2 boxes (500$ each), most tellers operate off dollar amount, not "boxes".
All area dependant, around here, good luck getting a bag ordered, it will always be boxes, other areas, it will be bags.

Half dollars come in 500.00 dollars at a time. Are any of you able to buy coin bags from your banks?

Does anyone know how much banks charge for the surcharge of them ordering you half dollars? Both banks I've asked have told me that there would be an additional fee for halves, but I don't remember the dollar amount. $20? $50?.......?

If you have an account at the bank, there should be no charge. Ask to speak to the bank manager.

Quote: I have an account there so I got a $500 box with no additional charge The business account is with Loomis; definitely a charge from them. My private account is with Flagstar. When I asked the girl told me that they CAN'T get me coins other than pennies/nickels/dimes/quarters (NO halves or dollar coins), and that she could try for me but there would be an added cost. Perhaps I need to find a main branch to ask instead of my local (satellite) branch.

One of the banks I get halves from requires a $1000. order, but they come in 2 $500. boxes. The other bank can get them in $500. increments. The bank that can only get them in $1000. increments get fed boxes the other is serviced by Brinks.

My bank gets S&S boxes for halves, while the nickels I have ordered came in Loomis boxes.

Checked out several banks today trying to buy halves. Two said NO! one bank said I could and when I asked if they would come in $500 boxes the teller checked and showed me a "bag" which had $1000 printed on it. So I assume this bank only gets $1000 bags. Will try to find a bank that can sell me $500 at a time. Hoping that getting skunked on $500 is only half as painful as being skunked on $1000 (' ') BTW, most banks I've visited this year, even if I had an account with them, said no to halves but many would sell me quarters - pennies. No one would order me dollar coins. Several tellers said "they" keep the silver when they find it, two asked for my phone number and would call if anyone turned in large $1 coins (not holding my breath on this one). One bank I visited last week had $280 in Kennedy's but the three rolls I bought looked well worn and all were 71-76, not sure if I should grab the rest, might get lucky but most likely I'll need to find a bank to dump all of them at. TD's coin machine will take them, but it's probably best to deposit the money and take it out some other time rather than just asking for cash on the spot. What's the game plan that you use here? Go to numerous TD's to distribute $1000 in halves? Or do some of you just dump them all at once? For those of you who do buy $1 coins by the box/bag, is dumping them something you've found easy or tough to do? I believe that no coin machines that will take them. For now, I think I may just stick to finding loose $1 coins at the banks until I "know" I can dispose of large amounts without pain.

heavy metal, most places Ive encountered wanted a 1000 dollar minimum order, though one bank would order me a single 500 dollar box.
As for that 1000 dollar bag you mention, it might be worth checking out! It could be a skunk, or awesome, or somewhere in between. But you will never know unless you buy it. Ive never bought a bag, only boxes. good luck!

A bank a friend of mine goes to says they have to order $1,000. It is two $500 boxes though.

Quote: Do banks frown upon this buy and return, or do you take to another bank to cash in? I really try to keep the tellers in my main bank happy, so I never return my coins to them. Instead, I belong to a credit union that has a coin counter about 5 miles away. I deposit all the coins from my B of A to the CU checking account, then later I deposit a check from that CU to my main bank checking account. In that way I am reasonably sure I don't get my own dumps.

Quote: As for that 1000 dollar bag you mention, it might be worth checking out! Agreed. Have accounts at two banks that have coin machines. I can slowly dump them at those banks and then write checks from those banks to the bank I bought the coins from to move the funds around so I can buy some more. One way to get rid of the coins and not upset any of the banks - I hope. I'll also contact someone I met recently who, among other outlets, sells merchandise at flea markets. He found he could get $2 for an Ike since the average person can't find them anymore but wants to collect them. That might be one way I can dump some of them and make a Kennedy on the deal going 50/50 with him on the sales. However, getting a $1000 bag of Ike's is another story. I'll try but I'm not optimistic about finding a bank that can order them for me. I'll ask the banks who delivers their coins and see if Loomis is one of the companies. Supposedly/allegedly in the past, some coin hunters have gotten Ike's at banks served by Loomis. Let you know if I get the rest of the $280 in Kennedy's I found at one bank. At least I can dump that amount in two shots at the two banks with coin machines. If I can find one good coin in the mix I'll be happy.
