I would not pay more than face and I would not cringe if I got one in a roll or change. Worse case, acetone can correct most bad paint jobs.

I'm generally not a fan of enameled coins since I feel it detracts from the original design and beauty, and silver/gold plated coins are usually overpriced in my opinion.

I'd use those coins in parking meters; it might give the person who empties the meters more of a thrill than it does me.

Just saw on a TV program an advertisement for Quarters with Ali the boxer on them. They were stickers of course.

One, I am very suprised this post has had life for this long. That much hate is not good ... Two, I have seen the 2012 crux coin in hand and it is beautiful to me. I missed out buying that one ... Before the owner figured out what it was worth. And what it ended up selling for.

Quote: They were stickers of course. There is bad, then there is really bad. I can understand using colour to enhance a coin's design, but a sticker is just pointless. Should have probably just used a slug. Quote: 2012 Crux Coin from Australian Mint Okay, that does look pretty nice.

Two years later, let me re-open this topic: A friend recently heard that I collect coins, so he gave me a small bag of colorized and goldplated State Quarters for my birthday. I smiled and said "thank you" and put them away, far far away. Yes, they are very pretty, but the thing I like about coins is the coin itself - I like the history, the art, the craftsmanship, etc. No reason to adorn that with color or plating. FYI: for my friend's next birthday I gave him a 10-piece silver proof set. I don't think he cared about it one way or another. I hope he gives it back to me next year!

I like them only when they are specifically issued for circulation.
It is only then, that I make the effort to collect them, because it is possible to collect them at face vale.
Otherwise, for me at least, I feel that they are a bit 'gimmiky'.
A technical challenge for the minting authority arises, such the pad printed colors can remain on the coin. despite the demands of circulation.
There is also the prize that all of the color remains on the coin, thus making it a target for collectors, and especially kids, who may attracted to the hobby of coin collecting, for an outlay at face value.

Agreed @sel_69l I have some Canadian quarters that were colourized by the RCM - they're interesting for that novelty factor. I read that the color fades over time, or comes off when rubbed (even gently) so I'm not sure how they'll look in a few years. But these colorized State Quarters - that's another story. The colors are overwhelming - too much for a small canvas. And I certainly don't understand the private mints coloring other designs over the State Quarters etc. Someone else mentioned the Tennessee quarters emblazoned with Elvis (he was from Mississippi!) which I don't love. Worse yet, I saw Obma and Hilary Clinton's portraits painted over James Monroe dollar coins. That's just unnecessary. These were mass-produced but I hope none were sold.

Nothing wrong with collecting non circulating colorized coins for those who like them, but my feeling is that they are the first step away from true numismatics (the collection and study of coins) and into the aside areas of EXOnumia. There is still plenty of welcoming space here in the CCF, for those collectors of exonummia.

I never new these existed until 2 weeks ago. There were 50 of the 1999-2005 State Quarters on a tray with some assorted other coins. I thought they were buttons at first. I actually ended up buying the tray for 20 bucks and put them on ebay. I expect to get probably 40-50 bucks for them. People collect all kinds of things, and I also think they might appeal to the younger crowd. If you wanted to get a kid interested, it might not be a bad thing to try. That said, I have no interest in them.
