Interesting. I never knew there was another option.
I do not like the first obverse and reverse photos. It may just be the way it was rendered, but I think the coin looks really bad. The concept does get more appealing when looking further down the page, especially at the medals.

I like the Liberty cap, but as long as the paper dollar is being produced, a dollar coin will not circulate in thee US.

First of all, I haven't seen the new issue, but I really like the Liberty Design and always have since it was first revealed. COW: Quote: I swear I just saw something like this somewhere... I saw this design or something very close in John Mercanti's recent book on the Silver Eagles. I think it was in his bio of Frank Gasparro who very much liked the liberty design but was overruled in favor of the SBA and its connection to the women's rights movement.

Ukk! Sorry guys (and gals!), but Scary Hairy Mary looks like a 1793 cent that had a bit too much of the gin. The eagle looks like it's wings are broken and it's going in for a crash landing.
I can't see that this would have been better option to the Anthony, which was pretty ooogly too. But it doesn't really matter. No matter what the design would have been we'd still have a few billion of the stupid things sitting in some massive vault somewhere because we can't give up the Seigniorage.

Quote: because we can't give up the Seigniorage. Well, yeah, I guess there's always that. In the "real" world it would be like trying to abolish Black Friday shopping sprees.

A LOT better coin. She looks like she's in awe though, almost constipated....

There are two points I'd like to add. First, what we see probably isn't the final design, the one that would be on the hub. Second, ever since the mint went CAD [computer aided design], we're getting face designs with too much expressionism, e.g., SBA obverse and Washington's spaghetti hair. In the analog days we got details that were more impressionistic. Sort of like analog vinyl records vs. CD's in music. Maybe I'm using the wrong analogies, but do you get what I'm saying?

I'm with moxking--it's too busy. Of course the SBA was pretty dismal in its own right.

THATS IT! Sorry, but I just remembered where I saw it! I was reading a book on Frank Gasparro!

I think this would have been a waaaay better coin than the Susan B. Anthony. Just my opinion though.

Well, the OTL SBA dollar's main problem was being confused with a quarter. This design, with a left-facing head on one side and an eagle on the other, would inevitably be perceived as a fancy quarter (even more so than the actual SBA). Also, I agree the design is a bit too busy; and while this is much better art indeed, the actual SBA dollar wasn't that ugly. And, um, why is there a stick, well, sticking out of Liberty's neck? (I know it's the continuation of the stick that the cap is on, but it looks very silly, and why is the cap on a stick in the first place?) Incidental question: much like the Eisenhower dollar, the SBA dollar does not directly give any indication of who the person featured on it is (something that, apparently, was almost unheard of for European coinage, as indicated in a recent CCF thread); which makes me wonder whether there was anyone who thought that the coin actually featured a particularly elderly looking Liberty.

I like the scary mary design. I think it would have been better than SBA, but then again SBA herself is a good choice for a woman on US Currency.

I don't know if I really care for this design... Guess I would have to see this coin in person to get a better opinion of it...

IMHO almost anything would have been better than the SBA design. I hated this coin from the moment I first saw it in the late 70's. I have a complete set of them only because they are part of the focus of my current collection. I keep them stored away. I like the liberty design, I think it could have worked with some minor tweaks. As for the SBA reverse, it was good for the Ike dollars but did not work for me in the smaller format. I also think it showed a real lack of originality not to change the reverse design, but hey, congress is the reverse of progress.
