coin roll hunting cents will yield the most results. Give it about half a year and $500, and you will probably find a key date/variety.

welcome to CCF . If you really want to start collecting coins then your in the right place. however the first thing you must learn is proper terminology. It's called a Lincoln Cent ,not a penny . Unless you want to collect UK Coins. there are many coins you can start with. As I mentioned the Lincoln Cent offers many challenges, 1909-present date. This is just my opinion but try to stay away from the new stuff coming out of the U.S.Mint. it will only drain your wallet and they have no history behind them. most of my coins date from 1818-1955 in a nice good to choice AU+ condition. and the pride I get when ever I look at them is unreal .Collect what interests you, and enjoy the hobby. don't worry about selling right now ,that can come later down the line.

Yeah, you can start small and easy. Just looking for stuff from rolls you get at the bank. But starting with a little education doesn't hurt either. I like the Coin Collectors Survival Manual by Scott Travers. Also Whitman Publishing has a variety of great books on several different kinds of coins which are easy to read and rather inexpensive. Just type in the name: whitmanpublishing.com and you'll find them. They are super nice there too. And also..

Well you have been given some good advice thus far but I would suggest doing some homework on whatever coins that interest you. You will only get out of your collection what you put in it (time, money, etc.). Are you doing it for profit, personal satisfaction and love of coins and their history, leaving something for your heirs etc! You've come to the right place because all of the above are here and many people are willing to help you understand many aspects of collecting. Remember Ask and Ye Shall Learn! Welcome to CCF.

just got home from work and read all the posts! great feed back. I'm not interested in selling like right this moment cause I am only a noob :( I have a son who I will adventually end up giving. I was in need of a hobbie and whats a better one than actually money? haha I love it. I ended up picking up 25$ worth of pennys. just to get started found about 20 wheat pennys . I'm still learning on what to look for when looking but I thought it was a nice start!
happy picking everyone :)

If you want your 'hobby' to really have grounds as an abstract form of investing (which will more likely than not, do better than traditional investments)... maybe a great starting point for a new collector would be 'high graded' or 'low mintage' coinage. If that was where my focus would have started 20+ years ago!

Welcome .... Glad you found that dime ..... Jefferson nickels may offer the best chance to complete a set from circulation - Or at least get close ..... Lincoln Memorial "Cents" (aka "Pennies" - A penny for your thoughts) could also be on the list and then comes the State Quarters .... Get those three complete and we can suggest more!
