well I made it to ICCS in time, spoke to Brian who I thought was courteous. Brought him two coins, not my most valuable raw coins but two coins that I was never really sure about. One of them is my avatar, which until this day, I wasn't sure if it was a small 5/5 or not. I have a thread about it here: https://goccf.com/t/230013it took him about twe seconds to decide it was not a small 5/5. That's fine though, still a beautiful coin and a great example of a small 5. the next coin I had lower expectations for but had a bet with the owner of my LCS as to what ICCS would say. You can see a thread about it here: https://goccf.com/t/233839this coin took him less than a second and he explained that it was whizzed. That was not a surprise to me at all. Explained to him that I have many more, and nicer (lol) coins that I will take in the future. He gladly gave me a printout of the 5 cent silvers population report and I was on my way. Spent some money at Canadian Coin and Currency as a consolation.....

Glad to hear you had a pleasant experience. It's too bad about the results but at least you were prepared for the worst. I've been fooled by a whizzed coin before, I even posted it here on CCF and a few other regulars were fooled too, hopefully your ongoing bet with the LCS will end in your favor, good luck!

Great people and great selection at Canadian Coin and Currency in Richmond Hill.
How was the pricing though?
Last time I was there it was generally 90% of trends plus tax.
At those sky high prices, I did not buy a thing.

He gave me a quick explanation for each coin and saved me a few bucks in the process. If I had never read about ICCS on this forum, I might have been surprised at the office.....It is hard to imagine they are the premier coin grading company in Canada by the look of their outfit but I guess you can't judge a coin by it's holder . Their grading is top notch.

At Canadian Coin if you are purchasing a fairly decent amount they will haggles a bit, and what did you think of the wall. Hard to believe ICCS handles 300,000.00 coins in their facility but they are very nice and knowledgeable.

Last time I was there it was generally 90% of trends plus tax The person I dealt with was quite knowledgeable. The store is very impressive, I'm sure I saw a million dollars in slabbed coins and bills today. The floor has a glass section with an amazing sculpture made of red cents, shaped as a maple leaf. It was really cool. They have revolving counters with each denomination and dates in order. Their prices are through the roof for the slabbed stuff. Sometimes over trends. They have computers in the store so you can browse their website. I chose 3 coins on there and they went to the "back" to get what I wanted to see plus they showed me many more examples in and around the grade I wanted for each coin. I was hoping to fill 3 holes in my set including the 1911 I brought to ICCS, a 1907 ND and an 1887 5 cent piece. I settled on two of the coins, probably overpaid a little but they have exactly what you're looking for so I didn't mind paying a bit. I was also a bit disappointed in the verdict on my two ICCS coins so I wanted to treat myself. I will show the coins later tonight, the 1907 is slabbed ICCS AU55 and the 1911 is raw but MS, I paid MS60 price for it, I'm hoping it's a 62+. Overall good experience but like you mentioned, very pricey.

After Canadian Coin relocated to this former bank location the Storage war boys rented a store front in the adjoining plaza. A few months latter a wall was constructed, then a few months ago the wall was heightened just a tid bit of info but this wall must cost a small fortune. Next time ask for discount they do offer some.

Sounds like a fun journey. Makes me want to do the same when I'm in the area.

I have never known them to ever haggle - what do you expect from Rich Hill... Best thing you can do: take a business card from the other place and put your preferred spot price on it and when you're deep into the deal whip it out and just pretend to leave because you don't like the price. They are competitors and they know it. Even if you buy/sell at the other place you still come out winning because they have pretty fair prices if you know your stuff (most is retail though so knowledge is key!) Just go back and forth and play with them, it's pretty fun lol!

As for actual Toronto, I will recommend Shawn at Eglinton and Avenue (northeast corner next to the locksmith). He may not always have exactly what you want at the time so check in off and on. He doesn't mind talking, which is sometimes a rarity in the Coin World. PLUS! He knows his stuff.

Thanks Libertad, I will check that one out the next time I'm in the city. Any dealer who likes to talk coins is fine by me! I think the main reason I go is to talk coins, I only end up buying something because I feel bad about taking up so much of the poor guy's time.

Jared Stapleton at Metro Coin & Banknote on Annette Street is a good place to go as well in Toronto. Certainly not the selection that CC&C has, but Jared is also a paper money collector, and has built up the Toronto Coin Expo as a major show for collectors (as opposed to a show for dealers). You can also consign items for the Geoffrey Bell Auctions at his shop. Jared will happily chat with you, however his real expertise lies in banknotes and banknote errors, not so much coins - but we are teaching him!! Jared is also president of the Canadian Paper Money Society. http://www.cpmsonline.ca/executive.php
