bought this civil war token the other day. I think we can say this is a shattered die and it has seen its better day.

Quote: I die crack can be seen running around close to the edge of the coin and one through the date. The 1830 large cent is a N-4 and that is NOT a die crack. It is a scribe line that was placed on the die blank as a guide fro the placement of the denticals. That is actually an early die stage for the N-4. That is a die crack through the bittom of the date and up through stars 13 and 12. Later a crack develops from that crack just right of the date to the rim, and in the terminal state forms a Cud that encompasses the entire bottom of the date.

Personally, I think Dbrablec's coin is CUD-A-RIFFIC! exactly as it is. I understand that there is a lot of emphasis placed on errors showing their dates. Sure, sometimes having a date present is a must; like if, for example, you're trying to assemble a complete dated & mintmarked collection of Jefferson's with big old Cuds on their obverses. In this case you've got to have the date. Or, if you were interested in the degree of the premium the coin could command. Or, if you simply just prefer Cuds -or error coins in general- with their dates showing. BUT! THIS IS A BIG BEAUTIFUL Cud! If we're talking about a Cud of this SIZE, or the aesthetics of the Cud like this and its location, then we're talking about a fantastic rolling blob of metal pouring out of the rim perfectly into the now field-less space behind Thomas' back, neck, and head- looking kinda' mean, like it's bullying him or pushing him from behind- or a lot like a headless-jelly-monster-bust lurking there, having already eaten the RTY in "Liberty" as an appetizer and just waiting to attach itself to his hair and then swallow old Jefferson whole, and I'd say it just wouldn't have this effect or look like this to me if it didn't just happen to be in this area; the area of the date. So I just wouldn't say that it's "Too bad it's dateless". I'd say: IT'S AN AWESOME NICKEL! With an AWESOME BIG-BLOBING Cud! PLUS+ after-all! DBRABLEC FOUND IT IN A ROLL!

On the 'Reply to topic' page, click 'Upload picture'. Browse for the file. If it says it's too big, use the 'Free image optimizer' link, which provides instructions for reducing the size. Then upload again.
I can't wait to see your dime.

That looks like it's just PMD.

I'm still about 97% sure it's PMD. Some input from other experienced members wouldn't hurt. Even if it were an error, this isn't the right thread for it.

Sorry, I didn't mean you have to delete them. I think it's fine if you leave them up, but I just wanted to make sure you know the difference between an error and a terminal die state.
