We have our first hit!

My son (who knows about this project) came home excited from school today. It seems that yesterday his best friend (who does NOT know about the project) went to the car wash and was so struck by one of the quarters she got from the car wash change machine that she mentioned it to my son, describing how neat it was to find a new quarter that stood out from the old grimy ones otherwise dispensed by the machine.

It was a shiny brand new Saratoga-S quarter. "I didn't know they named quarters after battles" was her comment. She is a history buff like my son and wanted him to know that they were making quarters "about battles" now.

I note that this car wash is about 500 feet from the Starbucks where I have spent numerous of these Saragota-S coins. My guess is that someone got it in change from Starbucks, then went to the car wash and spent the coin, putting it into the car wash coin flow.

Unless there is someone else out there putting Saratoga-S coins into circulation. But that seems less than likely.

While neat, I could not justify the loss I would take each time I spent one.

Well I figured I would get enough enjoyment from the idea to make the loss worthwhile...would I get $15 (mint premium plus shipping) of amusement from doing this? Yes. Less than it would cost to go to a movie and enjoyment would last longer.

That said, it is not something I can afford to do very often.

Since 2012, I've ordered one extra "S" roll (of my favorite design that year) to open and cherry-pick. I spend the bag-marked and planchet-rinsed cosmetically-impaired culls.

So, last month, I spent seven cull Saratoga-S Quarters in the Denver area. I also get a roll of "P" Native American dollars every year to search. I culled ten of the 25 Code Talkers roll, and I've spent six so far at the car wash (2), parking meters (2) and charity donation (2).

(I do wonder if anyone 'found' any of the nine 2012-S Hawaii Quarters I spent that year...

The bags and rolls are still cheaper than purchasing individual coins on the secondary market.
My opened Saratoga roll had 33 collectible-condition coins and 7 culls.
$18.95 - $1.75 culls spent @ face = $17.10 for 33 good individual coins, or 52 cents a piece.
Individual "S" ATB's usually sell for at least $1 at dealers, so in that respect, I'm still 48¢ ahead each.
