Ken Potter is a member here on CCF,Koinpro. You could send it to NGC to be slabbed.

Kevin , you are quite well versed in the paticulars of a doubled die. I am curious if you compaired the size and shape of the whole lower ear , including the "doubled" area to the size and shape of another 1993 cent of a similar die state.
To me the whole ear area of your coin including the "doubled " area is that of a normal coin.
Your pics are just fine.

The one thing I haven't ruled out is die abrasion I don't see many of them and I know they can mimic double dies and if it turns out to be die damage it would be the first time for me to see it mimic double die so well not to mention how nice the rest of the coin looks I have most likely looked at over 2 million coins so can only go by what I have seen and not seen on coins and things that I have read,NGC is a grading service I have heard they can make mistakes which really anyone can but I really wanted to send it to someone that deals with double dies there whole life.but I guess I could try NGC hopefully they don't charge to much.

If it was just the ear it would be easy to know but there is other spots on the coin someone suggested john suggested NGC so I may try them just to find out for sure if some of or all of the coin is doubled, because even if the ear looks flattened the part going into the ear is rounded and I have seen double dies in pictures that have places that look flattened but in the end it could be die abrasion I haven't seen enough of them type of coins to rule it out.but I do thank everyone for your comments.please check out my new post with a split planchet it will give us something else to talk about until I get this coin sent off which may be awhile but I am honest if it comes back different than what I thought I will post it.it just might take a few months.

I have been doing double dies for over 20 years

I haven't been doing this for 20 years and I'm still trying to learn how to differentiate Machine Doubling from genuine doubled dies. However, it sure as heck didn't take more than a few days for me to learn that what I am looking for is a doubleD die and not double die.

If it was abraision the details around it would show that. How could the surrounding hair not be affected if it was polished in that area? The area you are referring to on the ear, if you look closely enough, does not match the shape of the ear it is in contact with. A doubled die is exactly the same shape. Plus looking at the shadowing of all the devices makes it appear lower than the ear itself, and makes it look flat as there are not any curves of shadowing like on the ear. My thought is that it took a hit.

I would also like to know which "experts" do not agree with the 1997 doubled ear. From what I have seen, Wexler, Potter, Crawford, Daughtrey, Wiles, Fivaz, Stanton all agree it is a doubled die on the ear. That is the royal court as far as I am concerned.

I have already stated that I am not familiar with die abrasions so if you say that it doesn't look like die abrasion ok.but on the 1997 double ear I went to a sight that talked about controversial coins and the 1997 double ear was listed.when I get time I will flip to a couple sites to try and find where it was listed.but as to saying who didn't agree,it never gave names.

Is there a known double die on obverse and reverse for a 93D? I stumbled upon a very cool coin.

His last post was in March 2016. Looks like the new DDO made him quit.
