Assuming that since it is so far overweight that it is a lead alloy, any ideas on how they get the brownish patina on it? Ive run across old coppers in the past that were somewhat brown, but clearly made from lead.

No idea except my concept on a contemporary counterfeit is just speculative.
I'm not sure what the brown color patina even is covering the lead alloy..or how old it is.

Just posted one of these the other day on IG.
I love it BC I'm from NJ. The horse reminds me of the "Jersey Devil" stories as well

Sounds like a job for John Lorenzo.

Contact me privately. This ultra high weight has me intrigued. Can you measure its thickness with a micrometer?

I seen two other Jersies over 200 grains. One should be listed in the Siboni book ... hopefully this is real. A piedfort coin?

I'll measure the thickness later today but I don't think so.
The composition is what I'm intrigued about.

This one is so crazy Dave! If a counterfeit they had to have used the actual 58-n dies to make a transfer, I think....the cracks are just too perfect. Yet the weight and mushy details..... piedfort is an intriguing idea....who really knows what was going on with Atlee et al. and Machins at this time. These camel heads are fascinating......so much we have no idea about!

I have to say that a counterfeiter would almost surely not go to this length. It looks spot on to what it should look like to me.
