Hi Bob,
Just saw your article and I find it a great informative piece of writing. See, I'm not the only one who told you to write a book. Since you wrote a little sidebar on the horses the Parthians used, perhaps a piece on the bows they used might be next?

This coming weekend marks the 2,069th anniversary of the Battle of Carrhae. Zach "Beast" Beasley of VCoins has written a great, in-depth account of the military engagement for his "This Week in History" article: http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u...e=0525b38cb7

Thought I'd update this old thread with an impulse $5 purchase I made today. Some context: in the mid-19th century a "meat extract" product known as Liebig's Extract of Meat was developed. It was "a molasses-like black spread packaged in an opaque white glass bottle (containing) reduced meat stock and salt." According to the Wiki page, "The product enjoyed immense popularity and became a staple in middle-class European households." More at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebi...Meat_CompanyThe company had a long history with, eventually, a number of mergers and buy-outs along the way. It is apparently part of the lineage of today's Premier Foods in Great Britain. Liebig's was well known not just for the meat product, but for its very popular sets of colorful trading cards. According to a Princeton page (at link below), "Collectors number the cards at 11,000 distributed in 14 countries and languages." https://graphicarts.princeton.edu/2...trade-cards/Anyway, today I spotted a 1903 card depicting a Parthian shot. If the image is historically accurate, then it would seem that Parthian warriors wore tight-fitting leopard-spotted pajamas into battle. Who knew? I anticipate framing the card and hanging it in my studio or office.

Another great thread Bob, very interesting and informative.
Not only do we see these beautiful coins, but the history behind them too. Thank you once again for sharing.

Quote: Perhaps the inspiration for Lululemon? These guys were ahead of their time, for sure. Invented the first battery AND Lululemon apparel. And yet they hardly ever rate a mention on the History Channel.

Nice little find Bob!....Looks like the horses wore the same outfit! It was great to read through this thread again really interesting thanks.. I always thought of the Mongolians being the 'Crème de la crème' of horsemen but I must say these Parthians would take some beating! Pic will look great framed on the wall next to your new IKEA cabinet!?

Great find Bob! Before getting into ancients I was a pretty avid Victorian trade card collector and had some Liebigs in my collection but not this one. There was even a group called the Victorian Trade Card Collectors Association which had quarterly publications. I do remember seeing at least one or two articles on the Liebig card series. Not only did the Parthians wear spotted pajamas but they might have eaten this awful canned meat (sorry you Spam lovers!) as well or, conversely, as the picture shows, they are shooting at the Liebig employees for making such a "wonderful and tasty" product!!

Thanks, all. Hopefully Oriole can find those PJ's somewhere. Quote: Looks like the horses wore the same outfit! Of course, Paul. Lack of coordination would have been considered a faux pas. The idea: overwhelm your enemy with arrows AND style. Quote: IKEA cabinet!? Still a few months away - perhaps during my spring break in March, hopefully. Just haven't had time to get downtown to see it through. But the weaponry is getting to be underfoot - been picking up some more. Really do need to get the storage system in place - and to document and upload (to the gallery) the new acquisitions. Plan to do a bit more bouncing between the weapons and coins this year. Last year the coin purchasing was pretty much on hiatus. Quote: Nice revival Thanks for the supportive comments, Scott. Much appreciated.

Always nice to see you return to the board, Steve. Neat that you collected some of these trade cards. But, I'm confused. Are you suggesting that a "molasses-like black (meat) spread" could be anything other than completely delicious and desirable? Maybe the Parthians in the illustration are racing toward the extract, and trying to reduce the competition behind them? Such stylish gents must have been connoisseurs, after all.
