When we change monarchs, I think we could change the design. I would agree that we should go more towards a european style system with .05, .10, .20, .50, $1, $2.
For the design, I would want it to be something consistent and reflects symbols of canada, but not kiddish stuff that was seen in many of the 1999/2000 quarters. I keep trying to think what that would be, but I always come back to maple leaf, beaver, coat of arms, canoe, migratory bird, bear, fish and snowflake. Maybe just an update of some of the designs or switch it up a bit, with the first three being most important to me. I don't really like the cariboo.

With the proliferation of new pay vehicles, there will be much less need for coins.
My sense is that govt will eliminate rather than augment. Maybe put out a $5 coin.

I think that Canada is way ahead of the U.S. in innovation for the circulating currency. Introduction of a 20 Cent coin makes sense to me.  |

Interesting that at this moment the poll sits 71% of favour of staying the course with the designs we have. Also interesting reading some of your discussion point so far, including: Quote:

It terrifies me how much the RCM turns to contests to help them make decisions on design, much like they are doing with Canada 150 series. They no longer seem to hire experts like Alex Colville, Kruger-Gray, or Emmanuel Hahn in order to get things done right. Don't get my wrong, contest have not been all bad, but the RCM certainly has the resources to take a more professional approach. For this reason alone, I'd stick with our current designs. |

I voted for 'no' change. However, if I knew it would be done with class, tradition and above all else 'expertise', I would vote for a change. I would guess though, the new changes would be some modern 'off the wall' symbol that some yahoo thinks represents Canada and to boot, the design would be poorly represented on the coin (ex. the mountain lion on the silver maple).  |

To note on a couple comments above:
Hate the idea of reintroducing the 50 cent coin
hate the idea of bringing in a 20 cent coin.why have a 20 cent coin if we have a 25 cent...
Love the idea of making our nickel smaller!- the nickel being our lowest denomination should have the smallest dimensions.
As for the design; I don't like the idea of a complete change for all denominations. I like the idea of a snowflake and maybe we could use that design on a "small nickel" that would look fantastic on a proof or specimen issue in specific.

I think the 25 cent coin (quarter) is too ingrained in our culture and our southern neighbours to be changed to a 20 cent coin. I wouldn't mind getting rid of nickel and seeing the 50 cent back in circ.

The only thing I'd like to see changed is the obverse! Out of all the monarch portrayals I like this current one the least, no I will go one step further and say I dislike it. Lets put some variety on the obverse.

 The original intent of coin was to make purchases. Over time considering inflation the purpose of the lower denominations is not clear. Moreover in recent years, RCM has been pulling older coin out of circulation, replacing it with low cost steel-plated coin. It's doubtful they'd encur the added expense of any other significant changes by altering denomination (20c). Has everyone forgotten next year is Canada's 150th birthday? I thought RCM was minting a complete one year circulation series to celebrate the event? My bet would also be on an updated effigy of the queen in 2017. No signs whatsoever that our newly elected federal govt has any intent on divorcing Canada from Queen Mom. |

That said, I am somewhat sad that the beautiful alternative designs from the 1967 series had not (to my knowledge) been significantly used later; in particular, as far as I know, they are not proposed for 2017. |

Stable coins and currencies are signs of stable governments, except for a 60 cent dollar at the moment.

I vote no change. If given the chance, the RCM would put out kindergarten drawings, fluorescent designs, cartoons, superman, or some other god-awful stuff. We are used to what we have now, so why give them a chance make things worse? I would like to see the nickel get smaller. I still get them mixed up with a quarter when reaching into my pocket and just seeing the queen. Edited by okiecoiner

I believe the next big change will see the 25 cent coin replaced by a 20 cent.
Somewhere down the road the 5 cent coin will suffer the same fate as the 1 cent and be discontinued.
With the nickel gone the quarter becomes useless as we will be rounding to the nearest 10 cents.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I concur with DBM and have seen this discussed in other venues. As nickels are my favourite Canadian coin, I would not be happy though!

Boy there is something majorly wrong with both front legs on that cat, how could they pass that design. The new 2016 bullion cougar is very nice. I wouldn't want a smaller nickel, too easy to lose. I have problems with the dime. Its hard to think of good replacements. I take that back, all 4 legs are misshaped for some reason, there is no balance  Edited by pocket change 50
