I don't have the best imaging it is going to be hard for you to see what I see,i have seen coins in circulation for along time that are missing nickel color but the edge always looks like it is suppose to and I have seen plated coins I know this isn't plated I am trying to figure out what could have caused it the edge looking like it does is what has me stumped.

I thought that dark spot was all nickel its not its all copper it has a dirty toned look just about all of the edge is almost full copper color even on the part of the coin that is nickel color the edge is still all copper color, you look at the edge of a dime there is like a line separating nickel and copper you still have that line except it is copper and copper almost all around

Does there appear to be silver showing through the copper like the images are showing. If so, then it is coated/plated with something after the strike. PSD

The second image of the quarter showing the reverse on the edge of that quarter there is some nickel left that is on the copper side that is the same type of look plus I weighed 10 dimes they all weighed 2.2 when I weighed this one it weighed 2.1 if anything was added in my way of thinking it would weigh more not less that is just another thing that has me stumped

I saw a penny on heritage auction site awhile back the date was a 1945 or 46 it was steel looking it turned out that the planchet was not bonded correctly with the tin and I hope I am explaining it correctly it was a while back and I don't remember word for word the way it was explained

Looks like what ever it is, it rubs off with circulation. With a missing clad, it doesn't rub off of the tops of the devices. I would keep it for now as an unknown till we know more about it.

Suggest consider something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VIntage-Pla...AOSw34FVIVx~

Or search ebay for "Vintage Micrometer".

The dime may have been struck on an improperly annealed planchet. If it retains its original mint luster, that would be the most likely diagnosis.
