it is

Many coins part of large collections that have been in boxes or cabinets can be left alone for decades, so who knows where this coin came from?

One of the largest collections of Gem BU & Proof Flying Eagles & Indian Head cents in numismatic history was stored entirely in Dansco albums.

Correct.

I think in this case, if it were mine, I would send it in and hope for a bingo. Could always crack it if disappointed.

I have bought coins from this guy before and I think he is on the level. It is sort of odd that the coin was not graded and slabbed. You can see this guy is a major ebay seller. I was just looking at his Buffalo coins for sale and they are nice plus he is willing to bargain. The trouble with ebay is you only get three offers and then they cut you off just when it gets to nitty gritty. That is a really nice penny.

Not everyone believes is slabbing their coins

In my area its hard to find certified coins. I think most collectors like to be able to handle their coins or as COTW says, they just stash them away somewhere and forget about them. One of the dealers I frequent was giving an estate estimate on a few dozen gold coins the family found in a safe deposit box last time I was there. Everything was raw, including some Ca. fractionals. (first time I've seen any in person)

I always kind of laugh to myself when I see people post statements like "everything worth grading has been graded." or something similar. To me that's a VERY limited view of a very diverse hobby.

I don't like slabs.

If this coin were mine, it would have been screw encapsulated or simply in a 2x2, in a non PVC album page.
I have a collection of over 4,000 coins, quite a few in MS 60 or better. No coin in my collection is slabbed.

Slabbing works best if you want to sell a coin, and you need to make it 'honest', with TPGrading.
Perhaps if you have lots of slabs, you can use specially designed slab album pages.

Yeah , they don't get much better than that .
If it was slabbed what do you think it would grade ?
I'll say PR-68 .

People don't realize that slabbed coins have only bee around since the late 80's. PCGS (1985), NGC (1987) and ANACS (1989) even though ANACS was been photograding coins, since the early 70's. The fascination with slabbed coins is a relatively new and recent thing. There are hundreds of years of collections that are not in slabs.

The big money coins that you see, are mostly just slabbed for authenticity and definitiveness before sale, not necessarily because the owners prefer them in slabs.

I see that the coin sold. I figure that the buyer would need the coin to grade PR65 to break even on the purchase. Looking at buyer comments the seller has been known to juice a couple photos.

Sold for $750.

I've watched coinman_2000's listings for a while (he has a lot of 3cs) and they seem legit.

Seems like it would be.

Because you don't need to when people on ebay bid PR65 money for a coin like this.

Highest PCGS graded is a 66, so that is fairly absurd with all due respect. I would be very concerned about it being dipped, especially with some of the toning on the rims. It's very splotchy and I would expect it to have fairly reflective fields, which I'm not seeing here.

Not trying to be negative, just giving my honest opinion.
