I'm tentatively identifying this as RIC 120 (RSC 81b), although none of the images I'm seeing are a precise match.

Some of these seem to me particularly desirable -

See: http://www.trajans-column.org/?page_id=47

Are the denarii described scarce or readily available?

Here's another, with some surface porosity and perhaps having been struck with dies that were getting a bit "long in the tooth" but again exhibiting a rather handsomely executed portrait.

While I'm posting on this occasion, here's a pretty good website that catalogues the range of coins issued under Trajan:

http://www.trajancoin.com/

Here's another that's also worthwhile:

http://www.dirtyoldcoins.com/roman/...r-Trajan.htm

I recently read that it was recorded that Trajan had worn specie withdrawn from circulation and melted down, and then besides the normal coinage bearing his likeness, reproductions of previous republican and imperial types were also put out (albeit they were not exact replicas), these latter being referred to as "restored" coins.

My latest, Aequitas on the reverse, RIC 118 (RSC 85). Others of this type I've seen photos of online seem to be fabulously pristine - this one obviously not anywhere near that nice, nor is the portrait especially well done, but I liked its overall look regardless.

As a type the same, yes, but yours is in much better state of preservation, and markedly superior to mine from an artistic standpoint as well.

I just realized that I'd never identified the second specimen I posted here way back in April. I have that one as RIC 177 (RSC 481a).

I really like them but they're out of my price band.

There are a few for sale on ebay at the moment around 200/250 $ with a reputable dealer denant

Another I just picked up, again exhibiting a very aesthetically pleasing likeness of Trajan, and a well executed depiction of Mars on the reverse. I believe this to be RIC 269 (RSC 372).

Hadn't seen any Trajan denarii that I wanted to add to my collection over the last couple years, until today. Although I wish this latest one was in somewhat better condition, it got my attention for the camel on the reverse (the personification being Arabia). I have it as RIC 142 (RSC 89).
