Plenty of them. I am not a great date and mint set collector. At my local club I asked if any of they guys had a set of JFK half dollars. I have all of the Proofs because I have the Proof sets, but I'm missing most all of the others.

I've also never admired the Washington quarter. I couldn't even get into them when I was young collector. I thought that the obverse design was uninspiring and the reverse was cluttered. I have a 1932-P as a type coin and a coupld of Proofs in addition to what is in my Proof sets, that's it.

I have a complete U.S. type set. That's why it looks like I have everything. I have purchased little pieces of everything.

I used to belong to the Worcester (Massachusetts) County Numismatic Society. It was an active, fun club with lots of enthusiastic adult and junior members.

Haven't graded any of these lately (actually never), but I'll say 64 as well. Jaw-dropping.

I left many comments on your $50 round example ... will not repeat them here.

Spectacular coin billjones ... and the dream of many true fans of the classic commemorative series.

For the grading game ... I'm going MS64.

A very rare, desirable and valuable example of USA commemorative history.

Thanks for sharing!

I had the round and octagonal pair sitting in the palms of my hands at an auction view day (Noble Numismatics - Australia's leading specialist coin auctioner); over four ounces of gold!

That rather memorable event was many years (30+) ago.

NGC graded this Pan-Pac $50 octagonal gold piece as an MS-64, and it has a green CAC sticker. This was the only time that I really insisted on finding a CAC sticker on the coin.

Many of these pieces have been puttied. If you not familiar with that, it is a coin doctor practice where an agent like "Bondo" is used to fill in scratches. The filled in spots are covered over with gold paint. In a year or so the Bondo rises to the surface with ugly results.

A number of these doctored coins have made it into PCGS and NGC holders. I've seen a few of them at the shows. I once had a customer who was looking for one of these coins in a lower grade. I was amazed by the number of pieces I saw that had been worked on by smoothing the surfaces and putty.

Why the term, "slug?"

Slug was a term used in the gold rush days for the privately produced $50 gold pieces that circulated out west.

You going to be "Waiting for Godot" on that one. I don't even like that coin. If I had one I'd sell and buy some REAlL coins.
