That's a 40% silver Bicentennial proof. My dad has one of those proof sets and that rim is a 40% silver one. No we didn't look at the rim, I can just recognize it cause I have a 40% half dollar. Nice find!

Quote: Paper/tissue test are inconclusive, but more on the silvery side. It might help to have one known silver and one known clad example with which to compare the test subject.

Quote: As a BU coin with an 'S' it has to be silver.
If it were proof, there would be a question. I'd forgotten about that!

After 1974 Numisma, the San Francisco Mint stopped producing business strikes. They have mainly done proof only since then, with the exception of the Susan B Anthony dollar, some circulating 80's pennies, and some 2012 ATB Quarters. Bicentennial had a silver proof set, which included the quarter. The coin probably looks like this cause it was in circulation for a bit, or maybe we have an error? This coin should probably get checked out by someone, as we should probably bring out some popcorn!

Nice coin! I like these in silver.
The 40% coins are actually "clad"- there are two outer layers of higher silver percentage (80% I think) and a core of lower silver content (maybe 20%). Total silver content comes out to 40%. This is why you can see a faint copper color on the edges, but it is noticeably different than a normal copper/nickel coin...

The outer cladding layer is 80% silver 20% copper, the inner core is 79.1% copper, 20.9% silver. While the total silver content is 40%, the coins effectively look like 80% silver coins.
