 GOOD GAWD !Issue price was $28.00 + shipping...  Of all modern Mints sets, why in the world is this one tanking so badly ? --  Heck...a 2009 P mint roll of BU Jeffersons might prolly be worth half that...I don't get it..  (Speaking of which, what is a BU roll of '09 P's going for with finished auctions ?) Edited by eaglefoot

2009 was a crazy year for me and I never got around to purchasing the proof and silver proof sets from the Mint. In early 2015 I paid $22.50 shipped for the proof set, and $46.80 shipped for the silver proof set, both less than the original issue price of $27.95 and $52.95 + shipping respectively. I don't remember if I just really searched hard for a good deal or if that was the market at the time.

I paid about $13 after shipping for a BU roll of 2009D Jeffs in December 2015 and felt it was a decent deal

There "should" be a long lasting value WAY above issue price for these Sets...with what's in there. I think I will file an official complaint with the little magic man who lives in the clouds on the top arch of the rainbow, who decides and decrees what coins/sets will retain value and interest for everyone. This can't be allowed to continue. ...this should have been the ONE set that would have been a Star...  What do they have to do ? -- put scratch off lottery tickets in each Set ? Have a coin depicting your mother ? Your dog ? A 2018 newly designed Morgan and Peace dollar included in the set might do it ? ...lol What's it take for the Mint to get a winner ? Edited by eaglefoot

I have been saying for years that 2009 sets are a good buy, at current prices.
I try to buy all that come into the LCS's I go to.
Current greysheet $19.00/$21.00
I also buy the 1996's. Greysheet $12.00/$13.50

The 2009 95% copper cents weren't given the proper treatment and are toning rapidly. Whoever was in charge in 1982 was long retired and apparently nobody thought that a bronze cent will react differently to moisture than a zincoln. Many of the 2009 sets are considered "ruined" which probably explains the low price--yours could go at any moment if it isn't already there.

I can confirm the toning on the Lincoln cents. It appears as a ring around the edge of the coin.

As of yet mine have not toned. Hoping that 2009 would be recognized as a "special year", in hindsight, is really my larger point, I guess. With new collectors wanting them who never got one....causing a neverending demand. And even longtime collectors who never buy sets, 8 years later, seeking them out. That kind of scenerio, is what I was anticipating, I suppose. But so maybe now, or 15 years from now, finding a clean set intact from "toning" might warrant some attention. ..  Not the fact that there are some moderately important coins in there....  I will always need the sets for my albums, but i'd like just ONE Modern Uncirculated Set to hold a great value and attention. ...apparently that is a pipe dream and a fools notion...ahh well. I pick up the cent sets whenever I can at a decent price. They then go in air tights and into a air tight tube. The 20 or so sets I have are not toned yet.
Air tight into air tight tube in a low humidity environment and they will be fine.

2009 Lincoln Cent is different in metal composition (copper) from the regular business strikes (zinc). But with 0.8 millions made, it is enough to meet the demand of every penny collectors that care the metal component for next hundreds maybe thousand years. Most lincoln collectors does not care and there are billions of business strike coins of 2009 lincoln cents available. It is very unlikely 2009 will ever be valuable even after 100 years. Just check 1931 s Lincoln Penny. It is rare in number and in value it is lower than not hoarded coins made earlier years. |

"Business strikes" yes.....Lincolns that are copper in the sets yes.... But I was meaning the totality of ALL the coins in the set....the one year only designs ..or last year of a series...or a new first year design. The Sacagawea's. ...Territory qtrs...Lincolns...All the coins. There was alot happening in that set simotaneously! But, as was said earlier, if no one really cares, and everyone who wanted one purchased 8 Sets....the demand for the Set (and any other set produced) will remain at ZERO... If you coveted the new design change of the Sacagawea, you bought P&D roll sets from the Mint. If you coveted the Copper Lincolns, you got them SEVERAL different ways from the Mint. If you coveted the Territory Qtrs., you got those P&D rolls from the Mint. But the "Set" had them ALL....as far as Sets go, I just sure thought it would hold a value better than most. But it's too watered down and devalued by the Mint itself with so many individual product options, I guess too. Edited by eaglefoot
