Fourmack, looks like you have a healthy little stash there lol.

Ace, now is that one you've found in the wild? If so good score.

Back in about 1995 I gave my sister about 100 mountie quarters as she collected, simply to do so. I or she had no idea of the large bust. I asked her a few years ago to get them so we can look through them all. Hmmmmm it seems they had vanished, every last one of them. She has an idea of where they went but no proof.

I found this in a roll of 73's that I bought while roll hunting about a year ago.

funny story, it was my dump bank, and the teller told me that earlier in the day they got some weird quarters in, and had to verify that they were legit. After she described them, I knew she was talking about the old design with the leaf wreaths, so I got really excited. I told her I would buy all their quarters.

I did not find any older silver quarters, however I did find 3 full rolls of 1967 and 1968 silver quarters.

however the real score with the LB Mountie (at least for me)

Good for you Ace and deserved with your persistence. The silvers were certainly gravy on the large bust score. It was mentioned earlier on about working in banks, my daughter works for a credit union and she tells me that pretty well all that work there have zero interest in coins and or bills, due to them seeing them and dealing with them day in and day out lol. Kind of ironic when a person has direct access and zero interest lol.

I met with the homeowner today, (I'm doing a small renovation there) she will be away until Sunday and said first of the week she will be going to the bank to get the roll. We got a signed-agreement in place and small commitment deposit, so lol, early next week will be update time. Cheers.

Well turns out that even with an agreed signed document that there are still people out there that will go back on their word no matter the situation. Payment in full today, but mind you I did spend extra time sourcing a large piece of cedar and did a custom turning for the base of a pillar at the front of their house to keep it in the original fashion of back to about 1905. And this is the thanks I get, they decided to not fullfill their part of the contract where it was stipulated that I receive 1 roll of their 12 rolls of 1973 quarters. It's too bad that in this life so many people have words that contain no value! I'll post pics later and you be the judge lol. My work is top drawer............

Oh by the way nothing was mentioned about my work done. They absolutely loved it.

In 1973 I worked as Deputy Curator of the National Currency Collection at the Bank of Canada in Ottawa. When we saw the news of the large bust variety, I told one of my assistants to look for them. Two days later she arrived at work and placed one in my hand! She had gotten it in change at a grocery store. Years later I pulled a couple out of a group of 1973 PL sets I had bought. Anyway, they clearly circulated and weren't just in sets.

Sometimes the RCM used retired "numismatic" dies to later produce business strikes. Maybe that happened here.

Well, today I received an email from the lady who was to give me a roll of quarters from 1973 when her husband put them in the safe deposit box. Turned out she found the original agreement stating such and as of this Thursday they will be in my hand, still in the original wrapper not searched. She had realized her mistake and with full apology too. Crossing my fingers...............will keep you posted on the results towards the weekend.

Obviously some got loose in Ottawa. In 1973 I was a paperboy for the Journal in Ottawa. I found two in my change and a friend of mine found one also. Ended up getting my 2 certifed a few years back....both ICCS MS64. Sold one, kept the other.

We were both typical young collectors. One of our favourite silver collecting moves was to bike out to the airport where they had machines that dispensed change. Whoever stocked the machines did not check for silver. We would change bills into change and then trade it back for bills at the stores at the airport and repeat.

I'm not too sure of the history of the fellow who set these aside, I do know that he was well versed in investments, so when I get these in hand the first pic will be of the roll, at which time perhaps those of you that know the look of an original roll from back then can verify it to the thread. I can pick up the roll tomorrow according to a new email, so,,,,,,,,,,,,,onwards and upwards right lol.

Well I'm not really convinced this was an original bank wrap, mind you it is in the way of getting them from a teller to roll up your change in lol. Time to start checking these out.

No winners, but quite a few that look real good, they'll certainly fill the empty spaces in the 73 quarter slots.

This one seems to have a slight cameo effect to it, there's a few marks that look like they're on the bust, they're actually on my loupe. The Obverse isn't showing it that well compared to the reverse. So 14 of them didn't make the cut for keepers, the rest faired pretty good and a select 6 are pretty well mark free on the bust and in the fields. One had machine roller marks on it. All good, perhaps next time it'll arrive at my door lol.

Hey m_d, here is a story for you...
My neighbor told me they have been saving 'mountie' quarters in a coffee can and was going to take them back to the bank.
I said I would buy them and roll them so they wouldn't have the trouble.

I did, and..I went through the whole can and didn't find one large bust.

Last year I was brought a bag of 927 mountie quarters found in a barn. Not a single large bust. Just as an FYI, only one showed up at the store in the last 3 years. The guy asked me to look through a handful of change asking if he should bring them to the bank. He had three mounties and one of them was a circulated LB. I offered him $60 after which he says, "Naaaah, I think I'll keep it"...

They sure are hard to find, and when it seems opportunity is knocking, it's really only teasing lol. I'll be wondering the rest of my life about the other rolls that are tucked away in that safe deposit box lol.

Today I was at this lady's cottage rodent proofing the dormer's, them red squirrels can get in any where it seems, we talked about all the rolls she has tucked away in the safe deposit box, her late husband of just over 10 years had taken them all out of circulation each and every day. She has never said if he ever found a large bust, perhap's yes or no, but maybe so and why she's never offered an answer.......

It's pretty cool how sometimes as we search out what we want, the roads we travel for such.
