I use a credit union, too, but their low number of commercial accounts means they do not move a lot of coin. It has been a while since I asked for rolls because I only go inside once or twice a year. Everything else is electronic. Of course, my hobby is satisfied by going to coin shows, not CRH. I hope one day you might give them a chance.

Quote: Nor have I encountered any fees EXCEPT for when I've used a coinstar (not at my credit unions) You can avoid fees at the Coinstar if you choose to get a egift card thingie, good to use at Amazon or Starbucks or Lowe's or https://www.coinstar.com/giftcards instead of cold, hard cash. Do you ever shop with Amazon or stop at Starbucks?

The Coinstar I use offers a gift card for the store in which it is located. No fee. Seems like a no-brainer since I am already there to shop.

Ill have to look into the gift card thing the be time I use a cs machine. I reroll all of my rolls & mark the wrappers so I kn I'm not getting back my same coins.
I live in an area where I'm close to another state so I'm going to try an actual bank in another state.
There was a coin show on my area in March & June & I did not go. I should've but didn't.
I'll look into see where & when the next one is.

Good luck with the other state. I hope you have success. I also hope you find a coin show to check out, even if you just want to look around. Worst case, I assume the shows you missed are annual ones and next year will be here before you know it. After all, we are now closer to the coming Christmas than we are to the last one.

As a kid I did CRH in the Southwestern USA. The midwest seems better!

Well moving to the mid-west would be a deal breaker. I need to be close to an ocean.
But that's good to know. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure about today, but for a long time (decades) prior to, say, 1980 the best place to CRH was California and the north west - areas served almost exclusively by the San Francisco mint. Some years ago I bought many LWC rolls from the estate of a woman from Sacramento who had saved them for no particular reason during the '30s and '40s. The yield was incredible - the SVDB was the only S-mint not found. Less than 5% of the coins were from Philadelphia.

Personally, I like Catalina, but never found any coins there.

I've only ever been to Cali once, for a work trip. One evening a met a new co-worker at BI for dinner. And I fell in love with its charm. During that trip I stayed in Irvine. I never had the chance to visit many places.

My better half is from LA. I have been there more than a few times to visit since she still has family in Southern California. For what it is worth, I have also been in Irvine for work a few times (Toshiba). A couple times a year her aunt sends me a box of change to search, so I have managed to keep my D-mint circulation finds current.

There really isn't a good answer. I would say the biggest impact is the number of banks in your area and your willingness to continue looking for a better situation. Most of us find a groove and get comfortable rather than pushing on to new banks looking for new opportunities. There are things regionally that impact the rate of keeper finds. For instance, none of the banks in my area allow you to roll-your-own coins. So every coin I return goes in to a coin machine. I won't go in to detail but this has several impacts on my CRHing experience vs people who are able to buy CWR's and deposit via CWR (I get super jealous when I see solid rolls of silver on CC ). The scale to which you CRH will also have a big impact. Credit Unions are usually great, until they're not. Like others have said, they don't have many commercial accounts. You can establish relationships and have everything running smooth. As soon as you push it to far or management notices a difference in the amount of coin in/out, you can be shut down instantly. This is a likely scenario at local and regional banks as well. I've experienced both. OO
