I see a little "wood grain" on the reverse. Nice coin.

Does wood grain help its value?
Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't wood grain from improper mix of alloy?

Beautiful! I concur, looks like some wood grain on the reverse. Value added, in my opinion.

coinlover1899, you are correct, woodies are caused from an improper mix of alloys. If you clean up the slab and find someone who likes woodies, then it is worth more, otherwise it is a plain ol' 1909-s VBD. Nothing to be complaining about though.

The slab scratches are inconsequential to me since it would be cracked for the Dansco 8100. Of course I must admit that the one I will eventually get is probably going to be graded about 40 points lower.

If your not going to crack it out ,I would send it in for re-holder . way too many scratches on slab . that could be the reason why sellers pics were so bad , he figures if potential buyers see a slab full of scratches they won't give it a second look . Congrats you son-of-a-gun ,you made out like a bandit .

jbuck - Value added because of woodgrain, an inferior planchet? Why? Would you prefer woodgrain on your car, or your forehead, or your dog?

Ok, so I'l be the negative Nancy here. That doesn't look like wood grain to me, but I could be wrong. Not sure what it is, but NGC didn't mind it, so it's good enough for me.... probably just an odd looking "grain" I haven't seen before. Those scratches on the holder can be polished out.

Before spending money to reholder, buy some Novus Plastic Polish and take a stab at cleaning up that holder. Most of those scratches will come right out.
