At that price I'd confirm the dimensions are accurate and offer them $3500 assuming the seller would allow cutting the bar while they're there. These are small bars and if they are not plated and the core tests good you've got $10k profit.

With a fake 10 ounce gold bar that has a tungsten* core, the gold covering can be plenty thick enough not to reveal the core, even with a very deep check test filing nick. If it needed to be tested in the first place to assure an intending buyer, it would be a sure sign for me to give this piece a VERY wide berth. * tungsten has the same density as pure gold. A bullion dealer would test, using an ultrasonic instrument, XRF useless in this case.

Quote: Was this in NW FL? Yes ... Pensacola area ------------------ The guy had a story .... His daughter had passed away in New Orleans and he needed to get there. All I had with me was a pocket scale. The shop I work at was closed, the main shop was 20 minutes away and would be closed before we could get there. I told the guy if he waited until morning, I could have it tested and would give him more .. but he said he had to leave for New Orleans. Of course .. something seemed off .. that is why I did not buy it. He did say we could drill it .. But at that point I felt I wanted to have NTR say it was good .. because that is who I would have sold it to.

Smells fishy. I think it was a wise decision to walk regardless if your gut told you it was gold. Might be worth a call to the local PD to see if any reported robberies. If it is real, there must be a reason he didn't pawn it quick

Anyone who wants to sell gold THAT cheap must have rocks in their head, or there must be some sort of serious criminality involved. Or both.

"the guy had a story" as all scammers must in order to get your attention.
Like someone else said, this guy would have had no problem going to a pawn shop or jewelry shop and selling it for way more.
It was likely stolen...but also could have been fake.
Use your instinct on anything like that...if it doesn't feel right then walk away...good job.

Pass on it.
But, if you can, sneak a photo or video the bar and seller.
It could be useful later on!

How to make a million dollars? Start off with $10 million.
Both buyer if he goes through with it, and the seller, when he gets caught: all loosers.

Download this right now. http://applications.kitco.com/suppo...etalynx.htmlKnow what you're doing. Good job not buying gold from someone off the street, that was the wise choice. 10 ounces is a lot of moolah to just throw around. Given the choice I like to take cast/poured bars over pressed/stamped bars because you instantly know that a poured bar has not been plated. For all you know the file mark could have been part of the design. Know what you're doing, and never mix business with emotions, ever; a screaming red flag.

Ah yes, a sad story to create some sympathy, probably an honest face (and maybe even a suit or so), and a sob story that made that you can't wait a single second. Which is making sense: if his daughter is already dead, she'll be dead tomorrow, too, so you really need to rush and can't wait for third party to verify your gold bar. And of course you have to visit your mechanic on your way to New Orleans. I do that all the time when someone close to me dies.
And then you have no cash money (how much would fuel be from Pensacola to New Orleans? $15 or so?) but just 10 OZ gold bars laying around your house, of course. Which you are willing to sell for prices that already would be low over a decade ago and to a complete stranger. Because borrowing a few bucks from a neighbor or friend in this exceptional situation is of course unthinkable and unheard of.
Nah, I would definitely have believe this guy and bought the bar with some of my counterfeit $1000 bills.
