So this article: https://www.fdic.gov/consumers/privacy/yourrights/ is interesting. It appears that this law (of not disclosing personal info) does not apply in cases of potential fraud, which they may be able to argue since you are buying and turning in coins constantly. Either way, this is a good read, and may apply to your situation. I highly disagree with what those employees are doing, and I do think if you talk to the bank manager, you may get somewhere, but I don't think its illegal :/

While in the bank or credit union coin roll hunting, never mention the work 'silver' to bank employees. 'Collector' is fine. Keep treats down to once a year.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can persuade the bank that I am not getting the same coins without mentioning the word "silver".

Just say you are looking for Collectable coins, old coins, and are trying to put together a complete set. I think the teller who spoke to you asking about silver, is trying to discourage you so that there is more silver for herself.

fistfulladirt: Funny, but at my one branch they mention the word silver all of the time... they always ask me if I'm finding any in the MW half dollar rolls.

I asked the clerks to order me boxes so I could help get my grandson started coin collecting! They think I'm pretty special. Spending time with Koby like that. On my last 2box order she ask I would be bringing them back? I keep them all in my safe! I order 1 box here and 2 boxes there, twice a month. Webekin

Quote: Even though, I'm apparently getting my recycled coins, I pulled out a 1964, 7 40%, and a 1999 s silver proof. So, either you are off your game missing those the first time or they are lying. Nice finds regardless. I do not see how this could be called fraud. Yes, it is a burden on the banks, but if they allow you to do it ( even though they are not required to do so) without charging any associated fees ( which is well within their rights to do), that is on them, not the roll hunter.

Quote: Is this against the law? Depends. I'm sure you can find an attorney who considers it is, or might be, against the law and will fight for your rights--real or perceived--for a price. I'm sure you can find an attorney (maybe those representing the bank or courier?) who would scoff at the notion that such actions are against the law. Depends.

There have been instances I have read about in the past where roll hunters have been investigated for fraud because they were believed to have been counterfeiting coins, just because they turned in coins so often to banks.

Interesting. Never heard of that before, are you sure you don't mean money laundering? Would like to see a link or two regarding coin roll hunters and counterfeiting.

Interesting concepts However, I would think notes, not coins, would be the more effective way to do either.

No one ever suspects counterfeit coins. I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids

Discussing a situation like this in the abstract is not a privacy violation. They are discussing valid job-related issues. Unless they are identifying you with personal data (other than say "the guy who buys Halves every Wednesday...) then they aren't violating anyone's privacy.
If you make a stink about it the word will get out and your banks can (and just might) cut you off. They are not required to sell you coin nor accept your returns, even for a deposit into your account.
Let them talk, and if they cut you off find another bank to do business with.

Their mistake was telling you that they talked about you.
