Lucky, it never crossed my mind that this coin could have been tampered with, therefore I have never weighted it. Very interesting observation by both yourself and Imthealphaomega.

Thanks!

325 x 325 pixels is a bit small. The CCF image optimizer allows for much larger pictures. Here is a link to some helpful information. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...g-images.asp

As a legend of numismatics (in my own mind) I hereby declare that the above 1896-S Morgan is a VF25.

Or, maybe I only have half a clue and just looked at the "Photograde" images, here:

I don't know enough to comment about the appearance of the date.

There'd be a little money to be made adding the "S" to an 1896 Philly, but my concern is that it might be totally a modern counterfeit. It just has that sort of look to it, at least to me. But if the source for it was reputable, then I'm probably wrong about that.

You may want to have the coin checked as there are a couple of things that could be an issue. On the date the lower loop on the nine does not close. The lower portion in the L in Pluribus looks off. On the reverse the lower leg of the E in states does not connect, and the O in dollar looks off.

Original, mid VF details, cleaned or perhaps obverse has environmental damage; rim bump just before 12:00 reverse. It does not look like a fake to me, but I am no expert on fakes.

After reading Lucky's post, I looked at the PCGS Price Guide.

WHile there isn't much difference in value with a VF25 grade Morgan, there sure is when you get to the GEM end of the scale. Wow!

With a value of $75,000 to $125,000, I can see why people might be tempted to counterfeit an MS66 or 67 1896-S.

Solid VF I think, and I don't see any obvious indication of counterfeit. I'd check with a magnet and weigh the coin as a routine check.

VF-25. I don't see anything screaming counterfeit to me. That said, the images are a little small and there is something that is a bit "off" about it, but it may just be the small, slightly fuzzy pictures. It also does appear to have been cleaned at some point, but I think it appears market acceptable.
