I'm Totally Clueless About These Silver Dollars

Syd, I went to that same show at Clemson! I'll have to dig out my ticket to see where I was sitting in relation...

Now I'm going to have to use my special powers and steal all of your memories from those nights... just you wait. I wish I could even compete with that. that would be sooooo sweet. Heck, even seeing them at Live 8 in London in '05 when they got back together with Waters would have been pretty cool, but still not near as cool as when you saw them. Well like my grand-dad used to say, "wish in one hand..."

Glad you mentioned that. From what I've read, that seems to be the mantra - never, ever attempt to clean old coins. And the reasons make sense...using something harsh or abrasive will do more harm than good...or the coin will look too bright & polished, and lose character. Etc. But that's only for coins in pretty good condition, right? For example, I wouldn't dare touch any of these silver dollars.

But I've also found a lot of old coins that are just plain filthy. Say, in a plastic ziplock bag that also contains a rusty pocket knife, an assortment of bobby pins, four .32 bullets, and a melted Cherry cough drop. I'm not making that up, by the way. God bless her, Mom was a stasher, but she wasn't well organized...

So what's the safest way to remove gunk and surface crap? I would think in situations like that you might as well try, because the coins are pretty useless in their current condition. It can't hurt.

Then you must be from my neck of the woods. I'm a native of Greenville SC and still live here. Where are you? Yeah, that show in the Valley was really special for me, I'm a 79 Clemson grad and been to many football games there over the years.

What memories? LOL Nah, I remember some better than others. Glad I kept the ticket stubs, it helps me to remember. Good practice, too. In 20 years when I have Alzheimers, I'll know to keep the kids pictures handy, so I get their names right.

You're right, that Live 8 reunion show was awesome. Those guys can still do it, they sounded great. Except for Roger's vocals, he struggled. But Gilmour can still hit every note on that strat. Some of the old guys are still amazing. I'm going to see the Moody Blues in April, I hear they sounded great on last year's tour.

Oh absolutely, I'll keep all of her coins, I'm not looking to sell any of them. They have a lot of sentimental value because she stuck these back as she came across them...she never purchased a coin in her life. And I know some of them came from her dad, because I found a bunch of his stuff stashed away in boxes...everything from his shaving kit to receipts and letters. He was born in 1882.

I'm not joking when I say her house was like a museum. She was basically living out of 3 rooms - her bedroom, the closest bathroom, and the kitchen. The doors on all of the other rooms were locked, and some of them had been that way for decades. And they were stacked to the ceiling with "stuff"...that's why I'm still going through her house 2 years later. It's overwhelming. She had a big old house out in the country, I'm guessing 4,000 sq ft. Mostly full of junk. For ex, there's a whole room full of nothing but boxes of old newspapers, magazines, receipts, mail, etc...dating anywhere from around 1930 up to now.

But even though that house is 95% junk, it's the 5% that keeps me trying to sort through it. Every once in a while I come across something cool. Like these Morgan silver dollars and other old money. My grandfather's pocket watch which still runs, it was made by the American Watch Co in Waltham Mass in 1873 (I found the serial number on the inside and looked it up in their online database). Old TVs, radios, clocks & cameras. A Singer sewing machine with the foot pedal, not electric. Some sort of musket-looking rifle that I haven't identified yet. A bucket full of Indian stuff - arrowheads, spear heads, and pottery. One of those music boxes where you turn the handle and it plays a song, it was made by the Thomas Edison Co in 1915. Etc etc, I could go on forever.

But she hid all the cool stuff underneath the junk. By God, nobody was gonna break in her house and be able to find anything to steal... it was hid too well.

That pocket knife might be worth something too actually........(of course, minus the melted cherry cough drop !)

Oh lord, I've probably found 20 old pocket knives. But some of them are rusted up pretty bad. Here's the coolest one I've got so far, from the 1933 Chicago Worlds Fair. Must've been brought back by family or friends, because I know she didn't go. It's solid metal and heavier than you'd think. Not a great pic, I probably ought to scan it like the coins.
