15 Ounces of gold in a single coin...

It's not at all surprising, given that it's almost 1lb. of gold.

Well since gold is weighed on the troy scale it's actually 1 1/4 pounds of gold.

And since the troy oz is a little heavier than a standard ounce, 15 troy oz is a little heavier than a standard pound, about 16.5 standard oz.

Peanuts to some.

These modern gold coins (especially 5 oz., 10 oz. etc.) are becoming more popular. Many were produced in tiny numbers (and over the years, some were melted etc.).

Thanks Slider23, yes it would appear on the surface that I made a good investment, however the unpleasant truth was that I have been following angel coins for years and it was my dream to have a "big" one.

this is where my investment method failed... in order to afford this coin, I had to sell several monster boxes (1 thousand) silver eagles at a big loss... I bought the silver when it was $23 an oz but I sold them at $15 an oz, so I essentially took an $8,000 loss to get the coin, which, at best, I am breaking even should I ever sell the 15 oz angel, since I got it at $18,000. I was on a serious time and money crunch to the point the seller emailed me that he was canceling the transaction, so I could not wait for silver to rise, the coin would have surely been gone by then or rose in price dramatically and I did not want to take those chances.

so I am not the brightest investor in the world, but I knew I would never see this coin again at a price I could afford. in the last 8 years, I have seen like four or five 5 oz gold angels, three of the 10 oz (one of which is on ebay right now - ungraded, see below...), two of the 15 oz angels (one of which I bought, the other one is referenced here on the HA auction), and NONE of the 20 or 25 oz angels.

so, yes, on the surface it would APPEAR that I did well, but on the other hand I broke even at best, considering the silver loss. of course, silver rose dramatically right after I sold them, but I am used to this kind of luck.

here is the 10 oz gold angel on ebay right now, and it is going for a good price, but upon close examination I see what appears to be scratches and other defects on it. it is not in a capsule so the possible defects cannot be attributed to a scratched capsule. even if I had the money, I would not buy it, it has been on ebay for about a month or so. in my opinion, remember, this is just my opinion, this coin, if I am seeing what I am seeing, would be lucky to rate as a 65. plus the color seems very flat on it, but this could easily attributed to the lighting and other other photographing differences.
