To answer some questions.....
I acquired them without a chronological order in mind. However, while the Julius Caesar is the most rare and expensive of the set, the Caligula took the longest because I was aiming for a great portrait. I think the Caligula, Claudius, and Julius Caesar are the hardest to find. This collection is valued at around 25k, albeit I am sure it could be done for less. I really overpaid on the Nero, because I really liked that coin. In Bronze it could be done for less. I think I tried it via Vcoins and managed a set for $3000, excepting one emperor whom I believe has limited or no bronze, I can't think of his name off the top of my head. As we all know coin quality varies as do prices. Do you want portraits, legends? I picked up a Bronze low quality Caligula for $100, but sold it off and went silver. My client has the 12 Caesars in Gold, and we assembled it for around $270,000.

What a great set. The artistry of those early celators was just awesome.

A big Congratulations! I'm not an ancients collector myself, but I have always found their historical significance and old age to be fascinating.

Very nicely done! I am particularly fond of that Claudius praetorian camp!
I am curious to know what the "price floor" would be for such a set; any coins in any conditions. I know that Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Caligula, Galba, Vitellius, and Otho are very tough in any issue, but I bet the rest could be done pretty cheap, especially if you allow provincials.

I researched the least expensive option for acquiring the 12 Caesar Set, all Denarius, except Caligula via the VCOINS site. Also, someone is selling via ebay for 15,000 a set they picked up for $2500 via CNG. Nice markup if you can get it. The set I came up with is around $4250, but I confess they are a mediocre set of coins. I presume a bronze or provincial set would cost far less. Via Vcoins: JC Cr 480/4 $780 Augustus RIC 180 $170 Tiberius RIC 30 $200 Caligula RIC 56 $295 Claudius RIC 83 $1550 Nero RIC 68 $250 Galba RIC 54 $430 Otho RIC 10 $350 Vitellius RIC 66 $250 Vespasian RSC 94h $90 Titus RIC 948 $70 Domitian RIC 691 $85

Nice work @Caesar77 The total I spent for my 12 in silver was 4517.00. I guess that means I have a bunch of mediocre coins. LOL

I paid $5 for my Claudius coin, which was totally crappy, here's the thread. So I guess that's the floor. Didn't someone here get a Galba bronze in a lot recently? (It's really about the Galba/Otho/Vitellius triple - Otho especially, because his only bronzes are provincial - and perhaps to a lesser extent Julius Caesar. Don't know much about Caligula though. I'm not really planning such a ridiculous set anyway, don't have that kind of money; even if I had, I'd rather buy a tremissis instead, it's a lot cheaper.)

I've just done a very quick sweep of V coins and Ma shops and have come up with a bronze set ...in my eyes.. ..ok...remembering you can get better and worse coins for this price!! About 1600 euros and if you can spread that out over a year its not too bad ...!! What do you think? Saludos Paul

Based on these discussions, it seems like $2K-$3K for a bronze set, $5K-$25K for silver and $250K for gold. Interestingly, it works out to almost exactly an order of magnitude between each metal.
@orfew, clearly you have found some great deals and are on the lower end of the range for spending--well done!
