The 2 Cent piece has active PVC damage and the WE is totally worn off. I would not pay $8 for the coin as it is a low grade damaged coin.

The wood box isn't bad. The coins, for the price you paid, are not going to make or break you. They are decent for the prices you paid. You did not get ripped off.

I've purchased too many details coins over the years so I would have passed on the 2-cent piece. The nickel however is a decent choice if you want a type example in that price range. I think you did OK.
How about some photos of that Standing Lib quarter?

Quote: And for $8, I found out what PVC damage looks like That alone is worth the $8 Quote: I've purchased too many details coins over the years Haven't we all The best way to become advanced at this hobby is to make some mistakes and actually handle and own some problem examples to learn from.

Sometimes ... it is hard not to have a little fun with posting... But to be serious. I agree the Shield nickel was not a bad purchase. If someone was Putting a type set together that would fill the Shield nickel with out rays hole ... and look good being there. Finding nice Two Cent coins can be a challenge. I am sure many of mine are similar .... you did not pay much for it ..so no big deal. For this hobby .. not all purchases are going to be home runs. You can learn from your good buys .. and your bad buys. We all make both. Just have fun and enjoy building your collection.

The Shield nickel looks nice to me. The 2 center - not bad, for $8 can't expect much - it's presentable and almost 150 years old, so if you can deal with the PVC not a bad little coin to have in your collection.

I like the Shield nickel. And the 2 cent piece, although damaged, is still a good pickup to have as an example piece. As GR58 said those can be hard to find in nice condition. So overall good job. You not only increased your knowledge, but you did it very cheaply compared to some of my mistakes over the years.

Agree the nickel is very nice, all the more so if that discoloration will dissolve.

Do some research 100% acetone...not fingernail polish remover.
There have been many informing articles on the forum from some very experienced members.

GRrr! I did a search and found several topics and every one of them said do a search for topics on the acetone method. So I left this site and searched the Internet and I think I have it down.
But In the comments to one video someone warned not to use acetone on copper. The 2cent coin is copper, is it not? Is there something else I should use on it?
Thanks!
